Today we’d like to introduce you to Adriana Lozano.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I would first like to express how grateful I am to be on this platform talking about my small business.
I am Adriana, the maker behind SulayClay. My small business started during quarantine as a fun hobby and creative outlet from my full time job in healthcare which was quite dark and busy at the start of the pandemic. There was a lot of unknowns then and playing with clay for fun was a stress reliever. I began to post my creations on Instagram where I would have friends, co-workers and family ask me if I would begin selling because they really liked them. I then began to do research about how to properly register my small business once I got my ducks in a row I started a business on Instagram and started to put myself out there to sell my earrings. I had so much encouragement from my parents, siblings, fiancé and my friend Melissa from MelissaMarieTX who had a small business. She really helped me out when I first started, and helped me get out of my introverted shell.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Having a small business comes with struggles along the way. My biggest struggle has been trying to overcome being an introvert and also the face of my business. I had to figure out how to be okay with being uncomfortable while putting myself out there in the world. Once I realized it was for the best, doors opened up for me. I meet new people who became friends. I had the opportunity to meet fellow clay makers, and got to meet so many customers in person which is the best feeling in the world.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I have been told that my style is very “bright and bold”, which I totally agree with. I love to create big, bright statement earrings. I am most proud of my floral and beaded styled earrings, those take so much longer but it’s so rewarding when you’re done. I constantly hear the negative talk from Others saying there is too many clay makers out there and it’s an over-saturated market but I am truly a firm believer in community over competition and that we all have our own style and I think that sets me apart. I’ve always had the mentality that if a customer doesn’t like a single style of mine I can guarantee they can find a fellow maker that makes something they do love.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
