Today we’d like to introduce you to Eduardo Moran.
Eduardo, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My name is Eduardo Alexander Moran Hernandez I am from Armenia Sonsonate, El Salvador, currently living and making art out of Houston, Texas. I am a DACA recipient. I am also an interdisciplinary artist who focuses on creating art that reflects my life and the things that I see on an everyday basis.
I studied Arts at Houston Community College where I earned an associate in studio arts after that I studied Art at the University of Houston where I earned a bachelor’s in fine arts and a minor in accounting and received a certificate in entrepreneurship from the Bauer School of Business at the University of Houston. Even though I studied Arts academically I learned about the arts by myself and with my uncle Neto who thought me about sketching and drawing when I was young in El Salvador.
My mission as an artist is to create art that reflects my life as an immigrant and the struggles that one must face in a new country. My mission also includes creating art that is aesthetically beautiful but that could teach the current and future generations the struggles and events that we live in as humans in the current world.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I would not say that the road has been smooth but I would not say that I’m not grateful for the tasks or goals that I’ve tried to accomplish. I think one of the things that are always challenging me is to create art that is beautiful aesthetically and that can have a message too.
I think as an artist we can create many things that are beautiful easily but it becomes more difficult when you tried to incorporate messages into your art especially if the messages are related to what we live in the current times.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am an artist who currently resides in Houston, Texas. I work in many areas of the visual arts. I work in sculptures, paintings, to murals. I don’t have a specific area where I specialize, but if I were to pick a favorite medium I would choose Murals/Walls or sculptures. I think one of the things that I’m most proud of up to today is the murals that I’ve created around Houston.
I’m also proud of the connections and friendships that I’ve made along the way. I think one of the things that set me apart from everyone else is my roots. Being from a small town in El Salvador makes you realize the many things we take for granted in a big city like Houston. Also because I’m an immigrant I’ve gotten to see many facets of life that others will probably never see which have helped me create art.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
One of the lessons that I’ve learned due to the covid-19 crisis is to always check on your close ones and to know that life can always change when least expected.
