Today we’d like to introduce you to Fatima Khambati.
Hi Fatima, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My name is Fatima Khambati, I Am an artist from Houston.
For as long as I can remember, I have been making things with my hands. My mom taught me how to sew doll clothes and I use to paint on it.
I have always been good at drawing in school, and one of my drawings was selected for printing eid cards, it was my first art achievement, that’s when I decided to become an artist.
Later I worked as an art teacher and I enjoyed painting murals and make teaching aids.
After marriage and kids, Painting became just a hobby, I would paint a piece to add to my art collection or gift a friend, eventually with support and love from family and friends and blessing of my spiritual leader Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin thus I worked hard to perfect my skills through lessons and began posting my work on social media.
I went through a variety of mediums and methods along the way, taking the time to experiment with color, texture and paint until I found my niche. I started in acrylics, layering colors, playing with textures and then I got enticed by watercolors. I enjoy the loose qualities of watercolors, the natural, inherent luminescence caused by the transparency of the medium on the white paper and the somewhat unexpected results. Adding bling to my painting is one of my favorite part, I like to try the salt sprinkle technique and dab with tissue for texture. I like my painting to look realistic but not too realistic but not to the extent of hyperrealism.
I paint what I love, which is often focused on nature. It is a great source of inspiration for my paintings. When I look at something that I want to paint, I visualize it with intention and my vision is to bring joy and colors to everyone’s life.
As a self-taught artist I hope to never stop learning.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My struggles
*Staying persistent
Talent and persistence come as a package, and having your own outside the box can be very difficult when it comes to staying persistent.
*Feedback
Finding a target audience can be very difficult, my all-time fear of not getting the response I dreamt of, but that doesn’t mean I should be depending on it. I know, it can be really hard sometimes since feedback plays a very important role especially at the beginning, but that doesn’t make it an indicator of my Talent and success.
*Keeping up
Talent also needs continuous practice. Talent comes in levels, when I feel I have reached an advanced level and just stopped practicing I find myself back to being a beginner all over again and that would be a nightmare for an artist.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My specialty is watercolors, I spend a lot of time experimenting and learning new techniques. I like to express my creativity in different ways, clothing design, artwork, now 3d artwork.
I don’t limit myself to a specific type of art, I keep discovering and evolving.
Recently, I transitioned my artwork to a full time sign business, signs53 was born a company where imagination is brought to life, just Recently I completed a giant toy duck with a tye-dye effect, combining my artistic talent and sculpting talent together.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Right now I am still learning, and I’ll continue to learn as trends emerge. There is a new trend in NFTs that may change how art is shared and viewed however the basic principals of creating art will remain the same.
