Daily Inspiration: Meet Jerry Brown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jerry Brown.

Hi Jerry, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
BRAVE Soap started last July in the middle of the pandemic. I went to the grocery store to look for soap and noticed that there was not a soap made specifically for Black men and didn’t speak to the unique needs of black skin. I found this to be very interesting and a bit disappointing. I joked with my wife at the moment that I would create my own soap that could be used for all men but created with black men in mind.

I began making soap for me and sharing it with family and friends. They all commented on how they loved the smell and how it made their skin feel and BRAVE was born and has grown from there. When I started actually selling the product, I wanted the business to have a higher purpose and not be focused on revenue; therefore, we committed BRAVE to donate a bar of soap to someone less fortunate for each bar sold. We are extremely thankful and appreciative to all of the support we being given thus far and will continue to make products for US and to continue to help build OUR communities.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth ride. The pandemic has had a tremendous affect not only on BRAVE but, more importantly, on our customers. We often get messages from customers telling us how much they love the product and what BRAVE is doing but money is tight and that they have not had a lot of extra income. We understand their struggles and we’ve tried to be an assistance, however we could to help.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Professionally I work as a human resources professional. This work has been extremely important to me because I have the opportunity to affect lives. I also hold a Doctorate degree in Business Administration so I have a deep understanding of business and what is needed for have a successful organization and how important human capital is to this success.

Being balanced is what sets me apart. I have a great balance of book smarts, street smarts, common sense and faith. This balance allows me the ability to remain calm and even keel throughout most situations I encounter in life. I am very proud of this balance very intentional to keep this balance intact.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
The Covid-19 crisis has taught me how to better live in the moment. Often time I found myself always looking to the future and while there are some advantages to planning, I often missed the opportunity to “stop and smell the roses” and to enjoy the process and journey of life.
