Daily Inspiration: Meet Kelly Thomas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Thomas.

Hi Kelly, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Designed by Kelly began in May 2019. I’ve always had a love and passion for design it began in 2006 when I had Home Staging/Redesign business for a period of time. Then I began graphic design and transitioned into working as a Director of Communications for a large church in the Houston area for eight years. In November of 2017, I unexpectedly lost my husband and instantly found myself a widowed mom of four. A few months after his death, I left my job of eight years because I knew my children need me at home. After the first year at home and things began to find their new normal, I decided through the encouragement of a friend to start my own business. So I could do what I love while spending time with my kids as I needed on my schedule. We just celebrated our two year anniversary and Designed by Kelly is growing strong. We originally started just working with churches and church plants but quickly expanded to small businesses and entrepreneurs as word of mouth spread about my business. Currently, we have over 40 clients. Besides churches and non-profits, we also work with a photographer, locksmith, technology company, project manager, homeschool sports groups, a prison chapel, a Christian artist, a baker, a young adult author, a rock and gem specialist, bloggers, female speaking coaches and many more!

At Designed by Kelly, we help small businesses and nonprofits stand out in the crowd by creatively and visually telling their story. We show our clients how to create a brand that customers will come back to time and time again with a website they’ve always dreamed of and an online social media presence that engages and connects. We do the hard part so they can do the parts of their business they do best. But I couldn’t do this alone. I am joined by my oldest daughter, Cara Jones, our Social Media Manager, my father, Joel Fischer, our local Photographer, my brother-in-law, Joe Bachert, my Website Design Assistant, and our newest addition and family friend, Sarah Ouellette, our Copywriter. We are family-owned and operated.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Like any small business, we had challenges along the way. The biggest one being learning who my niche was and what services I should offer. Once I got past that, I’ve been going strong. While I’m not afraid of a challenge, I’ve learned to stay in my lane and offer the best services I can in my skill set. I have added employees along the way to make me stronger.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
We work in three main areas: 1. Website Design, 2. Graphic Design and Branding, 3. Social Media Management.
