Daily Inspiration: Meet Shawn Kelly

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shawn Kelly.

Hi Shawn, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In November 2020, I was laid off from my job at the time. During the holiday season of 2020, I made a couple of Rum Cakes from my Grandmothers (Dad’s side) recipe. I offered to some friends if they would be interested in purchasing a Rum Cake from me. I ended up selling 13 cakes. It was then that I realized I might be onto something. Shortly after was Mardi Gras and I made what I called a “King Rum Cake”. It was a huge hit and sold a good number of those. Over 2021, I continued developing other flavors and building a customer base. For 2022, I ramped up the business, officially establishing the business via an LLC and hiring an employee to help. Looking forward to 2023, it is my goal to have a brick and mortar location. I am still a home-based bakery. My goal for the brand is to grow it to be a Brewpub. (Think BJ’s Brewhouse, but brewing beer onsite).

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I am not sure I would say it’s been a smooth road, but no real struggles either. It’s been slow, mostly because I have been attempting to build off my own financial ability. The business is now self-sustaining, but it’s still slow. Hence the reason I am wanting a brick and mortar sooner than later.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
By trade, I am a Drafter Designer. I went to college at Louisiana Technical College in Lake Charles, Louisiana, receiving my Associate of Arts degree. For most of the last 21 years, I have been working as a Drafter in the Oil and Gas industry.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
My friend Ali was a huge help to me in getting started, and who helped name the business. She would bring cakes to her work, and she joked that “Shawn is my little drunk baker”, and so it stuck. Also, my Operations Manager, Katy, who has stepped up to run the business. I would not be able to continue to work and run the business without her.
