Exploring Life & Business with Jing Johnson of Prism Renderings

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jing Johnson.

Hi Jing, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Born and raised in China, I came to Houston to pursue my American dream in 1993. Upon receiving my master’s degree in architecture from Gerald Hines College of Architecture and Design, I worked at several architectural firms in Houston.

In 2005, I struggled with a demanding career while raising two small sons. I decided to quit my job, start my business (Prism Renderings), and enroll in the MBA program at Rice University.

During the past 16 years, Prism has developed into a premium architectural visualization firm with hundreds of architect and commercial real estate developer clients across the country, commissioning over 200 projects each year. The notable projects in Houston include the George Brown Convention Center, Greater Houston Partnership, MD Anderson, University of Houston, CITYCENTRE, St Martin’s Episcopal Church, First Baptist Church, Second Baptist Church, etc.

I’m a practitioner of servant leadership and am committed to leveraging my business as a platform to help the next generation of women achieve their potential in careers and life. All Prism team members are working moms with young children.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It has been a very challenging but rewarding journey. Some struggles include juggling motherhood and business, striving to be an effective and inspiring leader to my team, Keeping growing the business and improving our financial performance, etc.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My firm, Prism Renderings (www.prismrenderings.com), is an all-women team in Houston, Texas. For the past 16 years, we have provided high-end architectural rendering and animation services for architects and developers in the commercial and institutional sectors. Our developer clients leverage our services to acquire funding, entitlement, and pre-leasing. In addition, our architect clients engage our team so their staff can focus on their core expertise.

I’m most proud of the following:

1. While growing my business, I raised my two sons, who graduated from UT Austin with business and engineering degrees and started their professional careers.

2. We have served reputable companies on thousands of projects nationwide.

3. We have hired a dozen working moms, supporting them in their professional and personal development.

4. We have supported several non-profit organizations and the local professional community for years.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
Our five core values (see below) drive our team culture and how we show up every day.

Professionalism – respectful, consultative, relatable

Responsible Flexibility- efficiency in work/life, fulfillment in both

Integrity – in our work, in our word

Servant Attitude – end-user focused, kind, giving, considerate

Mentoring – always seeking and sharing our knowledge

We have a team of advisors and consultants who continue raising the bar on business strategy, marketing positioning, financial performance, etc.

I’m actively involved with several mastermind groups, including Vistage and Collective 54. I also recently earned certificates from the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses program and the Real Estate Development and Investment course at Rice University.
