Exploring Life & Business with Maryann Murray of Hair By Maryann

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maryann Murray.

Hi Maryann, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Years ago, I was a model and was always fascinated with the hair and makeup artists I worked with. I then finished Cosmetology school, and one of my friends owned a chain of men’s hair salons. They suggested I learn how to do men’s hair and swore in 10 years; there would be a huge industry for men’s hair. Now, over ten years later, they were right! I worked in a couple of high-end men’s hair salons and then decided to open my own almost two years ago, and haven’t looked back!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has definitely had its ups and downs over the years. My school did not teach men’s hair, so I had to learn on the job. I’m still so thankful for my former coworkers and friends who took time out of their day to teach me and help me with my cuts at the time. Not everyone wants to do that understandably!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I am a small Men’s salon owner with only one chair. I specialize in Men’s haircuts, manicures, pedicures, and beard trims. What sets me apart are the spa services. My main haircut service includes a scalp massage, mini facial, paraffin hand dip, and shoulder and neck massage. You leave not only looking great but feeling great!

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you, and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
It was a struggle to stay open in the middle of Covid! Trying to keep an in-person service business open during lockdowns and vaccines was a challenge. The main lesson is just to persevere and stay true to your business and your customers.
