Today we’d like to introduce you to Riochi Giles.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was born and raised in Missouri City, TX (Houston). As a teen, I began a mentorship program called The Junior Mentor League. It was geared towards identifying and assisting students who were at-risk or who had stopped attending middle school or high school. I helped facilitate successful transitions from middle school to high school and high school to college/technical schools by connecting students to college and community resources. I played a major role in each student’s life by taking out time to teach them Life Skills and helping them establish schedules for completion of course work, balancing course requirements with extracurricular activities, and financial budgeting. Throughout undergrad, I continued to mentor inner city youth in my free time and in some more unfortunate cases, I provided shelter for runaways. After graduation, I moved away to pursue law school and found myself affecting change in people’s lives everywhere that I went. I have always understood the dreams of today’s youth and know how fragile they can be. Abuse, neglect, poverty, and lack of resources threaten dreams and keep them from becoming reality. I have chosen to devote my life to creating opportunities and programs of change that will help those involved to reach their greatest potential and live the lives they dream of living.
I spent 15 years in cross-functional roles with Occidental Petroleum, Citi, Merrill Lynch, and Lehman Brothers. My areas of responsibility included financial planning and analysis, deal support, compliance, and data analysis and management. In 2011, while working in Corporate America, I started Mission I’AmPossible LLC. March 2018, I pushed back from my desk for the final time.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
After spending 10+ years in corporate finance in various positions, March 2018 I found myself pushing back from my desk for the last time because I was not happy and I struggled with wanting to live purposefully. Was I going to sit around and wait to get laid off from a job that only satisfied me financially; or grow old within a company that only cared about their bottom line? So I made a commitment. A commitment to myself to figure out my purpose and to never give up on what I want.
Fortunately, several years prior, I started a side hustle preparing taxes and helping other entrepreneurs manage their hustle and created a stream of income on the side doing what I love, helping others. So it was now or never, I had to make a decision to grow what I started or find something else.
It has not been a smooth road. But like most things worth having, business ownership is not always easily obtained and surely not easily maintained. So challenges, I was ready for, so I buckled myself in and prepared myself for the ride of my life. I realized that fear was not the problem. I just needed to face it head on and channel that energy into something positive. I used fear to motivate me and keep me focused. I started with myself. I became committed to improving myself in every way possible and I knew success would eventually come. I gained awareness and confidence like I never could imagine. I began to walk differently, think differently, and act differently. I began to walk in my purpose and that motivated me everyday to get up and do it all over again.
I still continue to have challenges today, but normal challenges that are to be expected on the journey of entrepreneurship or business ownership. Today I am facing different type of obstacles like lack of funding which hinders me from hiring staff to help with the daily demand and inability to research and develop the tools that I know will help improve the lives of those I service.
