Hi Brian, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Attorney Brian White law firm is experiencing incredible growth in the Houston market. Houston is one of the top 3 most competitive markets for personal injury law firms in the country (by virtue of being one of the top law firms in the country, it is reasonable to say also one of the most competitive markets in the world. Moreover, since competition increases dramatically every year, it is not a stretch to say that the legal market in Houston is about the most competitive environment in the word, throughout history!
How did we manage to thrive in the market and rise to the top? Hard work. When COVID hit and the courts shut down for many months, we used our time to not only dig even deeper into our clients cases, but also examine every aspect of our business, from intake, customer service, pre-litigation and litigation and trial processes. We implemented technology to dramatically increase efficiency (which shortens the average case life span). We made structural, hiring and management changes in order to provide what we call “Radical Customer Service.” Radical customer service incorporates some computer automation of communications, but really focuses on staff training and quality control of client communication. We also took some of our COVID time to at least double the required annual attorney Continuing Legal Experience (CLE). We were one of the first law firms in Houston to try a personal injury jury trial completely virtually – in other words, the jurors, witnesses and court were all remote! It was predicted by some that trying a case virtually would turn out poorly for a plaintiff – but the opposite was true, we won big!
Due to our efforts to not miss a step due to COVID, we not only had record years the last several years (we increase every year) but we are also very well situated for the future. Instead of decreasing office space, we increased it 3X instead of laying off staff, we’ve grown it by 2x. We have done these things not purely for the sake of growing, but instead because we love winning! At the end of the day, all of our moves are motivated by obtaining maximum results for clients and take our client’s cases personally.
We are now looking to expand our Houston based operations to other cities.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Our biggest challenge at the moment is hiring. Our growth has meant a near constant interviewing/hiring cycle.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Part of our growth was made possible through finding successful and willing mentors. It doesn’t matter the business type, a quality mentor can make a huge difference. Aim for a company or person that you would like to be like in 10 years. They likely have already invented the wheel and can save you a ton of lost time – so don’t be surprised when you reach your mentor’s status in less than 10 years.
