Hidden Gems: Meet Dr. Tommy Watson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Tommy Watson.

Hi Dr. Watson, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I grew up in Denver, CO, with drug-addictive parents who were arrested 121 times by the time I was a homeless senior in high school. As a child, I spent a lot of time growing up in foster homes, crisis centers, motel rooms, living family and friends and bouncing around from place to place. I attended four different elementary schools in one year, lived in seven different motel rooms- one of which we lived in for an entire year. By the time I was a senior in high school, my mother went back to prison for the 44th time and father for the 77th time. I was an All-American football player at the time and went off to play for the University of Minnesota. I eventually went to obtain four college degrees, including my DOCTORATE, and became a school principal, written and award-winning book and short film (including Houston Global Short Awards). Now I’m in the process of pitching my TV series to executives and producers in Hollywood.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Drug addictive parents, homelessness, foster homes, learning disability, siblings involved in gangs and drugs, numerous schools, living with friends and families, almost losing my life to gang violence growing up in Denver, CO.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m an author, certified executive coach, educational consultant and executive movie producer.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Oftentimes, we think of mentoring needing to be done face to face. However, with the emergence of social media and the internet, one can constantly receive advise and connection to individuals around the world who can help in their plight. My current mentor is a successful TV producer in LA. We have to think bigger about mentoring. As well as, continue to support the traditional face-to-face.
