Hidden Gems: Meet Makayla Robinson of The Brat Kitchen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Makayla Robinson.

Hi Makayla, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Since as long as I could remember I’ve always been “business savvy” even when I use to work a 9-5 I’ve always wanted more. After working 3 different jobs I realized that working under/ for someone was not the path for me. I started my 1st official business at 18 selling swimwear, I did well for a while but it was hard for me to see profit because I would always spend the money.

I would spend so much money on inventory & photoshoots just to be back at square. I had to sit back and reevaluate myself, something had to change, I had to do something different that I actually enjoyed, something that didn’t cost more than what I was receiving. Becoming a Caterer had the be one of best decisions I’ve every made in my life. What started off as something I would normally do for fun turned into something that has opened plenty of doors for me. I’m thankful to have mentors & such a strong team that has motivated me to become the person I am today.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has not always been so smooth. The Brat Kitchen was founded November 2020, I went viral on Facebook & Twitter which had me booked & busy for months ahead. I was super excited because cooking wasn’t like a “job” I truly enjoyed it so I felt as if I was getting paid to have fun & perfect my crafts. All good things must come to an end. After losing my younger brother on January 22nd 2021 I felt that as if my world was falling apart.

Battling depression and grieving all at the same time. I felt as if I didn’t serve a purpose anymore. I had little to no motivation. I just wanted to crawl into a hole and hide forever. I took a break from the kitchen. For 4 months I didn’t book any news clients, post on my business page, or simply just interact with my clients at all. I felt defeated. My brother & I were so close he could cook just as well as I could. The day he passed I was in the kitchen cooking for a client’s birthday party with 50 guest. I tried my best to keep it finish the meal but I couldn’t think straight, I had no choice but to cancel literally an hour before her party. I was embarrassed & heartbroken.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about The Brat Kitchen?
The Brat Kitchen is catering service ran by myself (Makayla Robinson). I cater all sorts of events from birthday parties to bridal/baby showers. I specialize in brunches for any event.

I would like the readers to know that it’s not about who else is doing what, stay in your lane and focus on yourself. Uplift those around you even if they’re in the same line of work as you. Share your knowledge, network as much as possible and it’ll take you places you’ve never been. It’ll open doors you’ve never thought could be there. I’ve only been catering for 11 months and I can honestly say it’s the best decision I’ve ever made.
