Inspiring Conversations with Derrick Waldroup of TEAM RISE

Today we’d like to introduce you to Derrick Waldroup.

Hi Derrick, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I come from a long line of hardworking go-getters. My parents migrated as teens from the South to the suburbs of Chicago and built several successful businesses. Much of my work ethic and the determination I carry is a result of the values they have instilled in me. From National Champion at Triton Junior College to my service in the United States Army to representing my country in the 1996 Olympics, I’ve never forgotten the lessons I’ve learned along the way.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
My journey has not always been smooth. Though I’ve seen much success, I’ve also experienced setbacks. My wrestling career was dotted with multiple injuries and surgeries. At the time I competed in the Olympics, I was in need of a hip replacement due to years of wear and tear on my body. In addition to the physical struggles, I also endured mental health issues. I battled performance anxiety and depression during the highs and lows of my career. Because of this, I’ve been a long-standing advocate of holistic health including both physical and mental well-being. I will never be able to emphasize the importance of nurturing mental well-being enough. It was a game changer for me.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
TEAM RISE is a community of highly accomplished, skilled former wrestlers teaching fundamentals of athleticism and sportsmanship to athletes 3 and up four days per week. We teach all 3 styles of wrestling (Folk, Freestyle, and Greco) as well as offer free physical fitness boot camps every Monday night (free and open to the public). Our community places an emphasis on maintaining physical and mental well-being on and off the mat. All of our athletes have access to mental health professionals when needed through ThineSelf, a new startup we’ve connected with which provides members access to a network of mental health professionals specializing in a variety of areas. We really come together to support each other and the greater Houston area. During the storms and massive power outages, we opened our doors to the public providing shelter and warmth. It’s important to remain deeply rooted in our community and to always be of service to others.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
By far, my most favorite thing about our city is the access to diverse cultures and cuisine. Throughout my career, I was afforded the opportunity to travel the globe. I count myself as incredibly fortunate to be able to experience and become immersed in a myriad of cultures in my backyard. The only downside to our city is the traffic. While I enjoy exploring, I wish it didn’t take so long to get around.
