Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordyn Wright.
Hi Jordyn, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My name is Jordyn of J. Brielle Handmade Goods. I am a 13-year-old CEO, author, philanthropist, and youth entrepreneur advocate. I started my business when I was 10 years old. I had eczema and could not use the kinds of soaps I wanted. They would irritate my skin. My mom and I decided to make soaps at home that would be less irritating. We made a lot of them and gave some away. When my parents saw that people really liked my soaps, they encouraged me to start a business. I began selling my soaps at church and throughout my neighborhood. I then started selling them at vendor fairs and created a website where I could sell them online. I later added other products like bath bomb dust, body butter, and lip balms. They are all made with natural ingredients.
As my business grew, I got a lot of questions about how I started and why. After meeting other kids who wanted to start a business, I decided to create a space that would teach them. I first partnered with Microsoft to host my Dream Big Book Club. We focused on literacy and entrepreneurship.
Now, I have received awards, written a book, and help other organizations, such as Junior Achievement, encourage youth financial literacy and entrepreneurship. Also, each year I host a youth marketplace to help kids get hands-on experience with running their own businesses. This year on July 17th, I will be hosting Young Biz Kidz Day, a national event that teaches youth how to start and run their own business.
Creating my own path by doing something I love is very important to me. I want all kids to have the opportunity to do the same.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When I first started making soaps and other products, I had to do a lot of research and practice. It wasn’t as easy as I first thought it would be. But once I got my formulas down, it got easier. Also, I was really shy and lacked confidence in the beginning. I had to push myself out of my comfort zone to talk to people and promote my business. I’ve grown a lot since then.I had to learn that it was okay to make mistakes. I have made a lot of mistakes and sometimes I wanted to give up. But, if you don’t make mistakes, you don’t learn. So, I guess it really can be a good thing. I have wanted to give up a lot, but, I love making soaps and I love seeing how happy my customers are with them. It is worth it.
Also, it is really challenging when people don’t take my business seriously because I’m not an adult. I think kids should be encouraged and supported to start businesses early. There is so much we can do when we have the right kind of support.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about J. Brielle Handmade Goods?
J. Brielle Handmade Goods was founded by 13-year-old CEO, Jordyn Wright, and provides natural skincare products for teens that make self-care easy, fun, and affordable.
J. Brielle believes that how teens treat themselves is directly related to how they feel about themselves. For teens, this can be incredibly impactful as Gen Z and millennials are becoming more aware of mental health challenges. At J. Brielle, we want teens to embrace their talents, passions, and flaws so that they can claim their own space without labels or expectations imposed by unattainable objectives.
J. Brielle wants to inspire youth everywhere to know the possibilities that come out of believing in yourself, your passions, and your purpose.
We do this in three key ways:
We care for the needs of teen skincare by using ingredients that are natural and beneficial with messages that inform and encourage. We create skincare products that focus on the specific skincare needs of teens. We are tired of shopping adult-oriented brands that sexualize our market and care little for the impact their ingredients and message have on our health.
We make skincare for teens easy, fun, and affordable. Our products not only smell delicious, but they are simple to use, last a long time, and don’t cost an arm and a leg. We empower teens with information about the products they use so they feel confident about their skincare routine.
We provide youth with tools and resources to claim their own space by turning their passions into possibilities. We teach teens how they can use their talents and the things they love and turn them into purpose-driven outlets that positively impact their self-confidence and future.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Yes. Before COVID, most of my sales were in person and at vendor events. But I actually sold more soap during COVID. I had to quickly change what I was doing in order to still get my customers to buy.
Also, I learned that when bad things happen it doesn’t always mean it is going to be bad for business. You have to find opportunities even when it looks like there are none.
