Today we’d like to introduce you to Rosina Ng.
Hi Rosina, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I fell in love with makeup as an older teenager, and while studying at the University of Houston, I had a full-time job working in cosmetic sales. I started with Chanel and worked for many other cosmetic brands as the years passed. In 2020, COVID-19 hit and I got let go, like many other Americans. At first, I thought it was a door closed and an end to that chapter. Little did I know, God had other plans for me; bigger and better plans even. I really missed doing makeup and what was originally just an Instagram handle became my business name. I started Brushes and Roses in 2020, and like any small business, I had a lot to learn. I knew I wanted to work in bridal, as I am a sucker for romance and love. Starting up with zero clients and zero experience was very scary, but something in me kept believing it would happen. It had to.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I started with zero clients, zero experience in the bridal world. I’ve only done makeup on people attending weddings, not actual brides or bridal party.
I was also broke.
I was 100% self-taught, had to work off the word of mouth. Thankfully a friend’s girlfriend got me my first bride and it began there.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Brushes and Roses?
Brushes and Roses is an Asian-Woman owned business with a team full of women from different backgrounds working with all types of hair and skin tones. It was an idea that started during a difficult time when the world was completely recovering from quarantine.
I specialize in bridal makeup and hair. We are known for natural glamorous makeup applications and hairstyles.
I think what sets us apart from many other hair and makeup companies is we work with ALL skin tones and hair types. Which often times is not found in many other bridal hair and makeup services.
What I’m most proud of brand-wise is that we are a team full of POC women. That there is no client that feels left out when checking us out whether it’s our website or social media.
I want the readers to know, we work with everyone. They will never have to worry about if their hair type or skin tone will be a problem.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
Instagram has been a great app for us. It’s an easy portfolio.
