Inspiring Conversations with Scorpio Uzuh of Sins Of Many

Today we’d like to introduce you to Scorpio Uzuh.

Hi Scorpio, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
There was a time before 2019 when I was so engulfed in commercial fashion. I found myself spending money on brands, then having to take those pieces to tailors just to get them altered to fit me accordingly. At some point, it became exhausting mentally, and in addition to that way of thinking, I felt I was losing my “individuality” in the process. Everyone was, and still is, wearing the same clothes, shopping in the same stores, making the fashion scene here very monotonous.

For the sake of my well-being, I had to make a change. So I decided to do just that and embark on teaching myself how to sew. It was a process for sure, and one I’m still mastering, but it was literally the best decision I’ve ever made. Sewing saved me.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Of course, it hasn’t been easy, but then again, what in life worth doing is?

Sewing is tedious and requires a great deal of patience and discipline. It’s not flashy at all; you are in a room, with your sewing equipment and your tools and that’s it. What makes it worth it is always visualizing the end result (your completed piece) before you ever set your bobbin in place. Think of it as a puzzle, where you have all the pieces in order to make it happen, but you just have to put it all together.

I was never one to want to wait on anything before I started to sew. I remember, even after completing my first few sewing courses, that I felt I was ready to make my first collection and be in fashion shows, etc. But then I finished my first button-down shirt and the result was ummm….atrocious. It was a humbling moment for sure.

That made me realize I needed to go back into the lab and really focus on and perfect my skills. For the rest of 2019 I worked diligently perfecting the fundamentals of sewing and building a solid foundation until right after Halloween. That’s when I made my first real “wearable art” piece, my duster overcoat, and have continued to make art since.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Sins Of Many?
Starting in April of 2019, Sins Of Many was a brand first conceptualized for the modern man. Staying true to a modern and tailored aesthetic I developed a brand that aims to provide custom comfort and functionality to all my clients. I really want to focus on and stress the importance of stretch fabrics with a plush feel in all my pieces because even though “fashion is pain” as they say, it doesn’t mean you actually have to be uncomfortable in what you are wearing.

As I have continued to progress perfect my craft, I have crossed over gaining more of a unisex appeal and dipping into women’s fashion. My goal is to be able to do it all and make wearable art for all, bringing a unique bespoke look to the Houston fashion scene.

What sets me apart? I’m truly a one-man operation; lead designer, I source my own fabrics, make most of my own patterns and all my garments are hand-made and customized to each client. I pride myself in the art of “slow-fashion”, choosing to curate pieces by hand, which predictably takes time, in contrast to fast fashion via manufactures.

My proudest moments in my sewing journey have actually come within the last 6-8 months or so. I have solidified myself as a stalwart in the sewing community, being recognized as a menswear DIY influencer. During National Sewing Month (September 2021), I was honored with being chosen as 1 of 8 sewists to represent the Big 4 Pattern companies and take over their social media for a week. I’ve been lucky enough to be featured in numerous fashion blogs, and national sewing magazines, and even collaborated with JoAnn fabrics and other fabric stores for listed campaigns.

But, without a doubt, my proudest accomplishment has been the network of friends and partnerships I have amassed within the sewing community.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
With the world of Fashion becoming a lot more conscious regarding the unethical practices of fast-fashion and the benefits of using sustainable fabrics and implementation of slow-style fashion, I think the world of fashion is trending up.

I think as more independent creatives and curators continue to rise up and implement themselves in the world of Fashion you will continue to see a change…for the good.

I also pray, and HOPE, for continued gender inclusivity. My brand is not biased, I make clothes for all walks of life. There is no perfection in humans, so why would I try to implement that standard in my collections? The world we live in is composed of short and tall, big and small, LGBTQ, imperfections and hidden gems…so why isn’t that being represented more on commercial runways?!?
