Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Gordon.
So, before we jump into specific questions about what you do, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve always had a passion for art, and I knew I wanted to make a career out of it in some way. After spending the first half of my 20’s in and out of school, dabbling with graphic design, trying different fields. I decided to take the plunge and buy my first camera. I had always been obsessed with photography but had never given it a try since the thought of it completely intimidated me. But I decided to go for it and completely submerged myself into the industry. I watched every YouTube tutorial I could find, joined dozens of photography Facebook groups, practiced on as many random people as possible, talked to numerous photographers, went to as many styled shoots as I could afford, and six months later, I had learned enough and built my portfolio up enough to start up my business. I’m a full-time graphic designer for an interiorscape firm, and I do my photography on the side. I’m obsessed with everything photography and videography related, and hopefully one day I can pursue it full time.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been very difficult. I have a full-time job, plus I’m a full-time student. Learning photography was 100% “self-taught” knowledge so I had to research my own learning materials constantly which wasn’t easy. No matter what I was doing or what I had going on, I made it a point to watch at least 2-3 photography related youtube videos every single day. Whether it was about shooting, editing, learning new techniques, or even just a photographer talking about their own experiences, I try and soak up as much knowledge as I possibly can at any given time. It’s hard but so worth it.
What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of as a company? What sets you apart from others?
I currently specialize in portrait photography which includes, families, couples, seniors, kids, I’m a huge people person so it’s a blast for me. My style is considered “light and moody” which is a combination of “light and airy” and “moody”. I try and go for a very “whimsical” and “magical vibe”. I love to shoot in the woods, by water, and unique spots I’ve found in the outdoors. I also love to incorporate sparklers, smoke bombs, flowers, lights, and other things to mix up my aesthetic. I try and shoot and edit to my own style as much as possible to try and set my work apart from the overly saturated industry.
What advice would you give to someone at the start of her career?
No matter how busy your day is, try and set aside some time in your day (even if it’s only 30 mins) dedicated to growing your knowledge, advancing or practicing your skillset, sending out resumes, researching your field, etc. It can be exhausting at times, but if you have the drive and determination, you will be thanking yourself in the future.
