Life and Work with Dr. Charlene Lawson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Charlene Lawson.

Dr. Lawson, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Since I was a little girl, I’ve always had a love affair with fashion, but excelling in math and science, I was encouraged to take a more traditional route. I enrolled at Howard University and earned a Ph.D. in Chemistry. After graduation, I moved to Houston, Texas and started my career in the Oil and Gas industry. Now, this is a very male-dominated field, so I always brought my A-game to work, but in addition to that- wearing my heels and a power suit really gave me that extra confidence I needed to walk into any boardroom and own it. While in corporate, I met so many amazing, accomplished, career-driven women that wanted to express their personal style, but they really didn’t know how to do it in the workplace. I would encourage my female colleagues to embrace their personal style and helped quite a few of them to revamp their closets. Seeing their confidence shift and realizing how much joy it brought me, inspired me to start Style Chemistry Consulting. I want all women to realize that you do not have to sacrifice your style for success or authenticity for ambition. Since launching Style Chemistry Consulting, I’ve styled women in-person in the Houston area and virtually across North America. I’ve also been featured in several magazines, on television and become a sought after speaker. I work with women of all ages and body types and believe every woman should look and feel her best.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has definitely not been a smooth road for me. I became a mother at the age of 14, so the odds were never stacked in my favor. Many people did not expect me to amount to much of anything, but I decided that I would not let my past dictate my future. I buckled down, got focused and kept moving forward in the right direction. I encourage women to not dwell on bad decisions or past mistakes. Set goals and tackle them one by one. Rome was not built overnight! Patience and consistency are key. There are going to be obstacles, failures, and setbacks, but it’s all part of the process! Keep in mind why you started your journey, who you are helping and what will happen if you stop. Also, remember that to whom much is given much is required, You’ve got to face your fears and challenges head-on. Put in the work and I promise you will see your dreams come to fruition!

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Style Chemistry Consulting – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I’m a Personal Fashion Stylist, Style Expert, Speaker, and Educator. I specialize in helping women develop or redefine their personal image and build dream wardrobes using simple style formulas that streamline their busy lives. What sets me apart from other stylists is that I’ve combined a Ph.D. in Chemistry, a certification in Personal Styling and an impressive career in Corporate America to develop a unique approach to style. I’ve blended fashion and science to create a series of formulas designed with busy, working women in mind. I’m most known for my ability to create looks that embody authenticity, feminism, and class. What I’m most proud of is the fact that Style Chemistry Consulting is not solely focused on the exterior. As women, we cannot rely on just looking great, we also have to be great. So, in addition to styling, I’m also very passionate about speaking to young women on the importance of higher education, particularly in STEM fields, as well as how to be successful in Corporate America and in life.

Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well positioned for?
As women, I do not feel that we should not put any limitations on ourselves. We have the world at our fingertips. As a chemist, I would say that the world of STEM is in dire need of women leaders, in particular, women of color. There are numerous grants, scholarships, and opportunities for women who want to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and math. We need fresh, new perspectives in the science world, and I personally feel that women have the key.
