Life and Work with Joanie Veillon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joanie Veillon.

Joanie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My story started in my head, as a dream. I used to make wreaths for myself and family. I knew I had a gift and loved to bring colors and fabrics together. When I worked on wreaths or my crafts is when I was so excited, happy and content. I even started a little side business at age 18, making silk flower arrangements (before the internet and Facebook existed) but wasn’t sure how to market my product, so I quit.

Soon after high school, I joined the Marine Corps. It taught me much needed discipline. When I got out of the Marines, I started college. I wanted to do interior design but I was too scared of job security (no HGTV back in those days!) so I decided to become a registered nurse. I liked the medical field. I worked full time and supported myself and graduated. It was hard but I stuck with it. I loved being a nurse but it wasn’t my first passion. So, after being a nurse for 22 1/2 years, one day, I just got tired of hearing myself complain about taking action, so I decided to quit nursing and jump in full time making wreaths and arrangements. It was scary and exhilarating all at once. My husband was none too happy either, I might add but I told him I was going to change the world one wreath at a time!

I took a UH business course, did lots research, stalked other wreath makers pages and shops and over 2 years ago opened an online ETSY shop, Facebook and Instagram page. I sold a wreath in the first week I opened my Etsy shop. I have never given up on my passion and now, I’m busier than ever, most days making several wreaths in a day. I started in my spare bedroom and now have taken over that room and several other rooms in the house and even have a dedicated shipping station. I have shipped wreaths all over the United States. My next plan is to create an open my own website.

I love to create, paint and coordinate colors. I also love to bring joy to others through my God-given talent. Sometimes someone just has a favorite item, like a teacup or favorite fabric and I get to transform their love for that and the colors into a wreath. I make collegiate and all kinds of different wreaths. Many people are now buying them for gifts instead of giving something store bought.

Never give up on your dream. Find a way to make it happen or find time for your passion and talents. I am so blessed to have flexibility, be home with my daughter and do what I love. It makes Mondays so much better!

And when your ready, I’d be happy to make you a wreath!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Life is never a smooth road. Some of the struggles was figuring out what it takes to run a business. The finances (sometimes, I do the blonde math!) and reinvesting into the business. Staying organized and planning ahead. You must always be willing to change and working for yourself is full time, all the time. If I’m not working, I’m always thinking. You have to learn to disconnect and focus on family and your priorities. Makes lists and write down your goals! Don’t give up! Even if something stops you, figure out how to make it work. Educate yourself and accept help. Stay humble and count your blessings every day!

Please tell us about Dizzy Blonde Designs.
I make wreaths and arrangements and love for resale specialty items I find. I am most proud of my work and making sure I deliver good service and a quality product. I may not be the least expensive but I always want the customer to have something of quality that lasts. If it’s not right, I will do my best to make it right. I listen and communicate so that my customers feel like they matter and they are not just another wreath or business order.

Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well positioned for?
There are always opportunities! We are women! My Dad used to own a printing company and he had cards that said: “Of course, I can handle it, I’m a WOMAN!” We shouldn’t feel different because we are women. Women bring lots of qualities to the world. If it wasn’t for women, the world wouldn’t exist! Embrace being a woman. All great leaders came from women. Their Moms! We all have our own gifts. Sometimes, we have to sit in silence and pray for discernment. Find your gift. We all have something special to offer the world.
