Today we’d like to introduce you to Layne Little.
Layne, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I picked up my first camera when I was a freshman in high school, hit the ground running and never looked back. I grew up in a town of less than 2,000 people and am self-taught, self-motivated, and began shooting family and friends and everything in-between!
I attended the University of Mississippi, and while there, began working with bloggers and businesses planning shoots and creating content. As I did more research and made my own business plan, I learned that I needed to start promoting myself in order to grow my brand. I began shooting more content featuring myself and evolved into what I like to call a photographer/influencer hybrid.
My focus is on, but not limited to, lifestyle, wedding, and portrait photography. I am currently based in The Woodlands area of Houston but travel all over the US for clients and companies that I work with. This is a passion that I love so deeply and hope to be able to share with you all one day when you book a session with The Rosemary Hen.
Has it been a smooth road?
The biggest hurdle to clear in this business is the comparison. I am constantly on Instagram looking at other people’s photographs and wishing I could have half as much talent as they have or half as many followers. Thus far, this has been the hardest thing for me to get past. I have come to the realization in the last few months is that growth is relative. Everyone’s growth (a.k.a. followers, likes, engagement) is all a case by case basis. We all have our own timing and our own story and we have to feel peace with the fact that our time is coming and nothing happens overnight.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned and would give as advice to anyone who might be stuck in the sticky mess of comparison is, DO WHAT YOU LOVE. I know, I know, you’ve heard that line a million times but it’s so true. If you’re posting what you love, shooting what you love, and doing what you love, people will see that in your work. When people see you and your true joy and happiness in your work, that’s when you grow.
Keep on keepin’ on and don’t forget… just do what you love.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
Generally speaking, I am a photographer, but I’ve recently stepped in front of the camera more and have started working with brands and companies to create content and promote the product.
I primally focus on lifestyle and portrait photography, with weddings thrown in here and there. I love capturing the client’s truest self (even though that can be hard when you’re in front of a camera). I love a good fake laugh and being my client’s ultimate hype woman.
What I’m most proud of is how far I have come since I picked up my first camera in high school. The growth and experience I have gained have blown me away.
I think something that sets me apart from other photographers and/or influencers is that that I straddle the line between both categories. It’s so much fun working with clients and companies to create content, capture stories, and truly make people happy.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve benefited from using?
I have listened to so many podcasts and TED Talks throughout the years that I honestly couldn’t even name one right now BUT one app (program) that has absolutely changed the game for me is HoneyBook. It keeps me organized, timely and keeps all of my clients, bookings, and financials in order. IT’S AMAZING. I would highly recommend it to anyone with a small business.
