Life & Work with Missy Wilson

Hi Missy, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
One of my favorite childhood memories is standing in a print shop, fascinated by print machines, paper variants, aromas, and the ever gratifying mixing of ink. My mom was a print specialist and graphic designer back in the ’90s and I would spend my evenings after school at the print shop; fascinated to say the least. I continued to be art and tech-savvy through grade school and went on to pursue Fine Arts in college, refining my design skills through application and practice.

In 2016, my husband’s employer relocated our family to Beaumont, Texas, and Hummingbee Designs manifested to fill a void in creative opportunity in the area. Inspired by frequent hummingbird visits to my great-grandmother’s yard and my love for her, I decided to incorporate the hummingbird into my business name. My name, which has a Greek origin, and means honey bee, also proved fitting as a reflection of my energetic spirit and bubbly personality. I am addicted to Starbucks and Chick-fil-a and think dry humor and sarcasm are essential to a fulfilling life. I’m thankful for the ability to take ordinary ideas and create the distinctive design!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
For the most part, it has been a smooth road but there has been a few highs and lows. I started my business in a small city where I knew absolutely no one. That was an extreme learning curve, starting a business from scratch, with no connections, no friends and family nearby. Then we had our first child in January 2018, and I had a newborn and a business to run. These challenges have made me stronger and also realize that entrepreneurship isn’t for the faint of heart!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Hummingbee Designs is a passion-fueled and skill centered graphic design studio with a commitment to transforming clients’ visions into the distinctive design. We pride ourselves on thoughtful branding that captures and compliments client messaging, marketing, and merit. From birthday bashes and business cards to corporate branding and catalogs, we do it all! And although we don’t like to pick favorites, aside from Chick-Fil-A and Starbucks, we have a “thing” for small businesses and female entrepreneurs.

What’s next?
We are gearing up for our relaunch and rebrand! We’ve recently worked with an amazing business coach (The Atkins Impact Firm – Shayla Atkins) and she’s really helped us fine-tune our processes and systems. We can’t wait to show you what’s in store! Re-launching our website with virtual games, prizes, and a giveaway!
