Today we’d like to introduce you to Tara Carr.
Tara Carr, a true entrepreneur at heart has held many job titles including fashion designer, fitness personality, business coach, and social media influencer. But, her most important role is and always will be Mom.
She got her start in business almost ten years ago when she launched her clothing line, Ava Lane Couture. After years of traveling all over the US to market and sell her clothing line, she felt the #momguilt and the constant tug of being in a career that required her to travel and being a mama to her then toddlers. She ultimately decided to let the business go to pursue a career online which would allow for more time at home with her girls.
As it turns out, the online business became her passion and she quickly began building a personal brand under her name Tara Carr. Today, she has successfully marketed and built online businesses in the fitness industry and in the business coaching realm. Her most recent endeavor though has landed her back in the fashion industry as an online fashion and lifestyle influencer. You can find her most days on Instagram, where she works with brands such as Madewell, Living Proof, Waterloo Sparkling Water, Valencia Hotel Group, DIFF eyewear, and 7-up to name a few!
Through it all, her goals have stayed the same. Empowering women to take charge of their careers and create for themselves any reality they can imagine. To teach women how to lead with confidence, show up for themselves and others in a way that makes them proud, and to do it all because they are capable and deserve it.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. There have been tons of obstacles along the way mostly imposed by my own self-doubt and confidence issues at times. We all have them and sometimes we let them slow us down, knock us off track, or derail us all-together. I’m no different than anyone else with a dream of being successful. I just decided to keep showing up even after derailing a few dozen times. The only difference between someone who is successful in business or in life and someone who isn’t is, that one of those people showed up one more time than the other.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
First and foremost, I’m an educator. My job has always been to show people, women in particular, how to show up in the world in a way that makes them feel happy, proud, and confident. I do that by creating content that people can connect to. Sometimes that means sharing a great pair of jeans that will put a little pep in your step, other times it means sharing marriage tips or an article on how to raise confident daughters. I don’t have all the answers, nor do I claim to, but I am extremely proud to say that I’ve created a space online where we can all share in these life lessons together. I set out to create a community of women who feel like girlfriends! I love that people can read my stories and feel like they’re just hanging out will a friend and getting advice on things!
There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that a lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
Yes. My advice is not to play small in this area. I credit so much of my ability to network at a high level to simply asking way before I felt like I was ready. Meaning, when you’re just starting out it’s scary and a little intimidating to ask for a seat at a table of big hitters in your industry. You gotta do it anyway. More often than not they will admire your courage and offer up the seat. You won’t get anywhere quickly by playing small. Just being a fly on the wall in a room full of people who are where you want to be is way more than what most people are willing to do!
