Life & Work with Alexis Nicole

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Nicole.

Hi Alexis, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
The initial start to my journey was completely focused on nursing school. It was very much tunnel vision for me. I figured I would follow an already paved path, check off the necessary tasks and live comfortably as a nurse. Somewhere along the process, I started to feel a little uncomfortable. I remember telling my mother one day, “I just feel like I’m supposed to be doing more.” Soon after, I started my Youtube Channel. I created my Youtube channel ‘The Nurse Nook’ with the intention of sharing my experience through nursing school to encourage those who were either interested in nursing or going through the same process. Fast forward years later and my channel has grown into an entire career that is beyond what I could have dreamed. I went from hoping to just one day make it to 1,000 subscribers to receiving my own Youtube plaque, building an income that allowed me to go part-time at the hospitals, and growing partnerships with some of my favorite brands.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There have been many ups and downs along the ride alike many other professions out there. One of the biggest obstacles being finding the motivation to create. When you are your own boss and in charge of your own schedule it was be tough sometimes to gather up the energy to film and curate content. Especially as a full-time employee so days I was so mentally exhausted, I didn’t have much to give to my online community. Thankfully, I am learning a balance of how to give just enough to both of my careers.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am very proud of the community I’ve built on Youtube. I currently am at around 278,000 subscribers. If you would’ve told me this five years ago, I would not have believed you. I am proud of the fact that I built this community being my very authentic self. I didn’t really hop of trends or make videos only on trending topics. I literally would film whatever was on my heart that day and I feel that it translated well to my viewers.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
Moving to Houston was one of the best decisions I could’ve made for myself. For one, as a nurse we have the largest medical city in the world so it’s a great place for RNs to be. In addition to that, I feel the people here have a sense of ambition about them. It’s a very inspiring place to be.
