Today we’d like to introduce you to Deborah T. Scott.
Hi Deborah, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Hi, I am Deborah T. Scott, a licensed Realtor in the great state of Texas! Serving Houston and surrounding areas. I assist Buyers with finding their forever home and Sellers with getting top dollar for their homes. I do not shy away from Investors either! I earned an Executive Master’s Degree in Public Administration with a focus on Public Policy from Texas Southern University, which is why I am driven by policy and results. I am an entrepreneur, a mother, a wife, and a friend! I am courageous, genuine, loyal, and hardworking! I am honest, dependable, and passionate! Let’s not forget, I am also Debbie’s daughter and so much more!
At this point in my life, I am truly proud of the relationships I have made both in the public sector as well as in the real estate industry. I truly work with some amazing folks!
I have been on both sides of the spectrum. I have been both a buyer and a seller as a single mother, I have also been both a buyer and a seller now, as a married woman. I am here to make dreams come true, establish a norm that purchasing a home for your family can be a reality, your reality! The idea of homeownership is so far fetched for many, but I am here to change that!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I have learned in life, nothing is ever easy. God gives us the ability to have faith and see that although we may go through storms, they don’t last always. I have held a real estate license for 15 years, while also working in the public sector. Some months, I did great in sales and some months, not so much. I transitioned to what was best for me; apartment locating and new home sales. I made good of my time and actually was great at apartment locating. My advice is to find what works for you, take time to educate yourself. When you are educated, you are an asset to your clients!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As a Realtor, I am your friend! I build relationships!
The day that I actually took my real estate exam was a truly dark time in my life. My daughter had just passed away unexpectedly and the day of the prescheduled exam, I was actually headed to meet my mother at the funeral home to finalize her services. After a few unsuccessful attempts at rescheduling the exam, I just swung by the testing facility to take the test again. The proctor was extremely compassionate, but my options were to either take the exam or not-I had already paid for it. I sat down in the room, took a deep breath and started. I passed the state portion, which was the usual and soon after began the national portion, which was the most difficult. I don’t want to say exactly how many times I actually took the exam before this date, but let’s just say, it was a lot of times, but I was determined and I finally passed both portions of the Texas real estate exam! I stood up in disbelief and I walked out of the testing facility in full blown tears because at that point in my life, it was truly personal for me. I made a promise to myself and to God that if he just let the sun shine again, I would use all of my gifts to help others!
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
So funny you ask. I have great mentors and leaders within my real estate office! I am big on listening and inhaling in all of the wisdom I can from those that have been in the industry longer. I just indulge in their advice and guidance!
I enjoy networking. I have a very infectious personality. I generally will take a couple of hours out of my day, bring my 9 year old son, Shane, with me and we will drive around or walk business centers passing out “swag-bags”. These are just bags with some sweet treats and my business cards. It gives me an opportunity to introduce myself, get an ear to the streets, so-to-speak, and find out if anyone is interested in real estate. It also gives Shane an opportunity to earn a few dollars. In the long run, I hope this teaches him that when doing business; it’s how well you present yourself, and how well spoken and well mannered you are that gets folks interested in what you have to offer.
