Life & Work with Demetria Johnson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Demetria Johnson.

Hi Demetria, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Growing up, I always knew that I wanted to act and model. As a kid, I would immerse myself into the television to escape what was going on in my life. I grew up in DC with my mother, who was an alcoholic and sister. I had to watch my mom be abused and raped by men so to keep my mind off of things, tv was my escape. I loved the characters that were being portrayed by the actors. I told myself one day I will be an actress on tv and other platforms. So acting and modeling has always my dream. But getting there took some time.

I have been acting and Modeling for the past four Years now. I have been in a few independent films like “Angels Revenge,” “I Use Two Love Her,” and “Have you seen London.” “The Life of An OG Cougar Movie, Cycles Tv Series and also a few stage productions “For Colored Who Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Is Enuf,” “When My Life Changed,” and also “The Vagina Monologues.” I have also modeled in shows like Africstyle Initiatives and CMBEA Fashion Show, just to name a few. My most recent work is “Two Sides of Glory movie, The Bathroom short, The Life of An OG Cougar movie, Fortune TV series, Justice Through Redemption movie and The Next Assignment.”

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road. Having to be accepted as a real actor. Some people didn’t take me serious. Building up my confidence was hard and it took a lot work because growing up, I had the negativity in my life where people told me that I would never be anything or amount to anything this played into my adult life. I am still learning and growing. I will never give up on my dream, regardless of what happens.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am an actor and model. I didn’t get started on my career until I was 44. I have gone to NY and participated in IMTA competitions. I have acted in scad films, TV series, plays and films. I have modeled in different fashion shows and more. I still work for the military as a civilian in Traffic Management. I am known for both modeling and acting. I am most proud of myself for not giving up and giving in. I am also a proud of my hubby, our family, which is blended and our grandbabies. What sets me apart from others is that I am me. There is no one like me because God just made one.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Have people in your corner that are uplifting you and not dragging you down. Don’t ever let anyone tell you that it will never work for your dream. Keep your head up. Being me has worked because I don’t quit or give up. Giving up for me is never an option.
