Life & Work with Derek Dominique

Today we’d like to introduce you to Derek Dominique.

Hi Derek, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My Name is Derek Dominique, I’m From The SouthSide Of Houston. Herschelwood is the neighborhood I grew up in. I started out in talent shows in middle school/church and from there I knew I’d become a music artist. I’ve been into music well over 17 years now, my first album came out in 2011. I’m now a music artist and songwriter for other artists. I write for all genres of music and have a few songs on Top40 radio as of today.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Music is never a smooth road. The easiest and smoothest part for me is the recording process. I produce, record myself, engineer the song and write the song. The hardest part about the industry is the business aspect of it. Also, the fact that things get randomly cancelled sometimes. It’s a you never know day to day type of job.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m known for being a music artist and also a songwriter. I have 3 of my own songs on Top40 radio across the states and 2 other songs I’ve written for other artists across the states. So right now I have a total of 5 songs on the radio. I’m most proud of the award I was given a few weeks ago from Hennessy, it was the artist/songwriter of the year award.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
The music industry changes every 3-5 years so you just have to continue to adapt but also keep your sound. It’s ok to not hop on the new wave but you also need to figure out a way to blend your talents within it.
