Today we’d like to introduce you to Ishara Jhacole.
Hi Ishara, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started acting in middle school by accident… and it kind of just stuck. When I graduated, I decided to take acting seriously and, instead of going to an HBCU, go to a performing arts school. That was a random last-minute thought I had that surprised me a bit because I had never thought about it. And at the time, schools were traveling and holding auditions… I figured I’d shoot my shot for one. I ended up being accepted through that one audition to The American Musical and Dramatic Academy (AMDA). I went to both campuses but I started with New York. My training was not only in front of the camera but behind the camera. I was able to connect with like-minded individuals and some not like-minded. See different POVs, put on shows, try different jobs, everything was at my fingertips. I appreciate AMDA because it allowed me to find comfort in embarrassment… I’m not afraid of trial and error. AMDA taught me that there is beauty in mistakes, everyone is a critique, and that the only opinion in the room that matters is yours. But whatever you do, stay committed.
Due to COVID, I was back in Houston when I graduated from AMDA. I had my talent but no network… So naturally, I got to work. Going out to events, taking acting classes, and accepting collaborations. I accepted “extra” roles for one purpose: to meet the casting director, director, and assistant director. Most of my bookings have come from direct contacts, auditioning, and creating my own opportunities.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, I’ve definitely had my share of obstacles in the road. For one, I don’t care what nobody says, I am really shy. I just manage it because I have to, and I still struggle with taking pictures and sharing my experiences/work on social media. Most days, I feel like, “Why should I share my life? My story isn’t cheap.” And some days, I feel like “Why not? People need to know who I am.” I’ve come to settle with the fact that they will. I don’t have to force anything or be on social media if I don’t want to, my talent and work ethic speaks and will continue to speak for themselves.
For two, in finding the “balance” between work, life, and my passion… I recently decided to stop working altogether. I vowed to myself to never work for anyone again and to focus solely on myself as a brand. A difficult decision but one I have yet to regret.
Lastly, building discipline and no matter how hard things get, walking in my faith. I have learned that I have to hold myself accountable. Be my own motivational support system. I watch a lot of Naruto and when I’m really brain-dead, I play video games or read a book. It allows me to stop overthinking, and to think productively while having fun. A way to not only preserve my fire but nurture it.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
First and foremost, I’m that ninja. If you know, you know. But for real, I wear multiple hats. Actress, director, writer, artist, model— and nobody really knows this about me; I am also a commercial real estate investor. I am best known for being an actress but I am most proud of my work as an investor. I’ll save all that for another interview! As an artist, I’m most proud of my reliability, my ability to connect with others and my flexibility on sets. Bringing a sense of family and teamwork, solving issues, and making a safe space for everyone to be themselves so that we all can do what we do best and create. I don’t really complain when it comes to my craft… I’m that person that just does everything out of love. Like there are a few people in the industry who can hit me and I’ll step because they asked. I enjoy the peace, love, and light energy… I enjoy making other people’s lives easier… inspiring others and making them feel important through my spirit, my craft, and work on set. As a bonus, I am great at what I do in all departments.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love Houston. My favorite thing about Houston is definitely the food and the culture. Like you know you’re in Houston because of the kind of art you see, the vibes you feel, and great food options you have access to. Nah, this is not LA. Nah, this is not New York. This is HOUSTON, we have that sense of ghetto charm that everyone seems to love. We’re just missing a real beach and ASTROWORLD! They need to stop playing and run it back.
