Life & Work with Jeff Dume

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeff Dume.

Hi Jeff, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
After years of working construction jobs in the summer and chasing hoop dreams during high school in Atlanta. I never knew life would knock so hard after graduating. After years of advice from men twice my age saying go to college, I knew I was destined to move mountains to make it in life. It took me 8 hours of taking online quizzes to figure out what I wanted to major in, and it came to be sports management. I moved 4 hours away from home and started my years of college trying to figure out myself and what I was meant to become. My freshmen year at Valdosta state was the foundation for learning what I wanted to do and figuring out the steps. My main problem was learning the ropes of financial aid and loans to put myself through college. Dealing with this, taught me financial literacy and help me understand how important credit is. At the same time, I learned how to become a barber from watching YouTube videos. However, I knew that would never be my aspiration and with Valdosta state not having my major, I had to change schools.

Now, I’m at Georgia southern university, known for parties and education, I knew I had a bigger purpose. I joined a promo team to network and get my name out at the new school, but I knew if I wanted a significant job after school, I was going to have to build my portfolio. I began the process of building accomplishments that I can put on paper. I knew it wasn’t going to happen overnight, but I knew that a marathon starts with a single step. I joined the wave of forex and was intrigued by numbers and the opportunities it had behind it. I lost money, but I gained the knowledge of the market and graphing then hopped right into stocks, where gains weren’t always the best, but the consistency was better than crypto.

In addition, it encouraged me to follow my dreams of becoming a sports agent, so I knew if I wanted to manage athletes, I must be able to manage students. Therefore, I became a student advisor. I wanted to learn how to market athletes, so I became a social media coordinator for a relative insurance company. I knew that these experiences were adding up, but I knew I had to go bigger. I decided to start the first-ever basketball club sports at Georgia Southern University from scratch. I had to do constitutions, flyers, waivers, logos, social media, practice schedules, workouts, and legal work with the school to establish a presence. That task itself took me 3 years, but it was worth every hassle because it set the tone on my experience and my resume.

Ultimately, it helped me lead to having an internship with Georgia Southern marketing departments, women’s basketball operations, and football recruiting assistant. All these internships led me to become a recruiter for the world staffing agency at Hays. Where I signed 2 new clients and billed 100k my first year into the industry. Most importantly, it helped me find the foundation in my upcoming consultant business where I help entrepreneurs obtain logos, ideas, sales, partnerships, expanding opportunities, management, operating, networking, obtaining funds, recruiting, and learning how to market their new business effectively. I review their plan and tailor their business plan to help it grow efficiently. On top of that, I knew that photography would help both aspects of my business and future brand, so I became a freelance photographer to try to keep as much of the business in-house.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road. I had to sacrifice my college years to be able to be where I’m at today. I skipped out on traveling, partying, and some activities to save money to be able to move as soon as I graduated college. When I moved to Houston, I didn’t have a job or an idea of what was next. I just knew I was going to work hard no matter what position I was in.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As of now, I’m a recruiter for civil construction across Houston and Texas at Hays. However, I started a business consultant business where I help entrepreneurs obtain logos, ideas, sales, partnerships, expanding opportunities, management, operating, networking, obtaining funds, recruiting, and learning how to market their new business effectively. I review their plan and tailor their business plan to help it grow efficiently. On top of that, I knew that photography would help both aspects of my business and future brand, so I became a freelance photographer where I focus on modeling and cars. I am most proud of my background and experience. It helps me set myself apart from other businesses, and allows you to have a point of contact for more than one business need.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters to me the most is authenticity. Be real to yourself and believe in your purpose, then everything else will follow. No matter how little or much I had, I knew something that would never be taken from me is my ambition and work ethic.
