Today we’d like to introduce you to Abena Adu.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Abena. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I became interested in childbirth after the birth of my first child in 2008. I was unhappy with my hospital birth experience and soon realized that other mothers in my community were dissatisfied as well. I began to naturally assist women who were pregnant and postpartum and was soon called a “doula”, which is defined as a women’s servant.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There has been struggles along the way because of a lack of childcare, so I had to pause in the birthwork for a few months at a time.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
