Meet Adam Gibbs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Adam Gibbs.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Adam. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I began acting in community theatre at age five. I was a Munchkin in “The Wizard of Oz.” It was in the children’s theatre where I first found a love for acting. It’s also where I learned lessons of creativity, empathy, trust, commitment, I could go on and on and on. After a childhood full of theatre and music, I attended Sam Houston State University, where I earned my BFA in Musical Theatre with an emphasis in Acting.

Throughout my 4 years in college, I tried to balance my degree coursework with trying to get as much work as I could as an actor in the Houston theatre scene. Since then I have been fortunate enough to make Houston my home with my exceedingly gifted wife, Rebekah Stevens. School brought me to Houston, but what has kept me here is our theatre community, our culture, our diversity, our food, among countless other reasons, just not the traffic, roads, or weather.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My road has been smoother than many. After all, I am a straight, white male in America. My privilege provided me a head start in the race and a smoother than average road. That being said, I have faced times of challenge and hardship.

The first major test I had was losing my father to a drunk driver at 15 months old. My family grew stronger and larger through that adversity. For every major tragedy I’ve faced in my life, there have been 10 blessings in return.

Self-Employed – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am a professional actor of the stage, voice, and screen. I’ve been involved in a wide array of staged projects, from big chorus musicals to small intimate plays. I’ve sung my heart out as Eddie Fisher, I’ve sold my soul to the devil as Dr. Faustus, and I’ve originated roles in 3 World Premieres.

I began voice acting in 2012 in a Japanese animated supernatural film series. Since then I have recorded on nearly 100 anime and commercial projects. When I’m not on stage or in the studio, I enjoy work as a teaching artist and private acting coach.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I have found milestones in many of the projects I’ve worked on over the years. I feel a sense of pride at every curtain call. However, playing Eddie Fisher in the World Premiere of Lawrence Wright’s “Cleo” at the Alley Theatre was a major milestone for me. It took countless hours of practice to imitate Fisher’s golden sound.

I’m also proud of the time I got the call on a Tuesday to get to the theatre ASAP. The male lead was out due to injury, and they needed me to learn the show from scratch and be ready to step on Friday night. It was intense pressure but was the ultimate self-trust exercise. I’m not sure how many more of those exercises my blood pressure can handle.
