Today we’d like to introduce you to Adelina Sanchez.
Adelina, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Creativity and innovation are all it takes to provide a solution to existing problems without creating more. Mix that with poverty, hope, empathy and determination (my “Mamba Mentality”); you get HEALING! My name is Adelina Inez Sanchez. Born in Chicago –from a strong Puerto Rican and Cuban bloodline; yet raised in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico.
At about 12 years old, I was faced with the responsibility of taking care of my premature sister; Jazmin. Among the many therapies needed, Jazmin benefitted the most from the help of a “Curandera”. This Holistic massage healer utilized a therapy involving cannabis salves. Later on in life (unfortunately, after her death), I realized the improvement in her medical condition had to do with the cannabis topical used in those massage sessions. About two years ago, I started working with a bedridden client with extreme rheumatoid arthritis; she exposed me to CBD topical. This led to intense research and the birth of Leafly Therapy. (She now walks about 20 steps from bed to massage table!)
With no family, friend or financial support the reality of “big bank takes little bank” hit hard. However, being as determined as I am was able to fight my way through major hurdles. As the subject matter expert, Leafly Therapy is proud to be the first medical massage spa in working towards building a healthy relationship between the massage therapy industry and cannabis industry- with constant promotion towards breaking thru the forefront of the medical industry. Awhile, being the source for education and referrals.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Nooo way! AND THATS THE BEST PART! Financial struggles are REAL! Now let alone the Federal challenges: like advertising and banking restrictions! Other struggles have been the -unnecessary- rejections; especially when trying to collaborate. For example, I approached a bartending school owner on having a workshop to teach the bartenders how to incorporate THC/CBD in drinks. Great idea, RIGHT?!!. This owner told me “I don’t teach other women to be my competitor”… The biggest struggle, tho, has been community support/engagement. I had offered dozens of FREE massages to close people I knew; not one took the offer. To get a client to post or give a testament about the benefits of my service/products and how much improvement she/he had experienced was almost impossible. The feedback some shared was: hesitation due to having church followers on their social media, or due to having a government job, to the fear of interference with immigration status. The stigma runs deep and I had not taken that into consideration.
