Meet Aekta Parikh of Polygon Physical Therapy Center in Richmond

Today we’d like to introduce you to Aekta Parikh.

Aekta, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was born in a developing nation, India, where Physical Therapy (PT) was not widely known. I was in high school when my mom had an automobile accident. I started taking her to physical therapy for her arm and I can recall this as my first introduction to the significant world of physical therapy. I was amazed at my mom’s recovery within a few weeks of therapy. She was able to move her arm again and get back to work. I was really inspired by that and started thinking about if I could help make a similar difference in people’s rehab journey. This is how my journey to become a Physical Therapist started. I studied for my undergrad degree in PT from India and got my Master’s degree in Science, PT, here at Texas Women’s University in Houston. I also received the Advanced Pediatric Certification. Upon graduation, I worked in a Medical Center for a few years, among other sectors. After 15 years of working in this field, I took all my experience and expertise and opened my own clinic in which I passionately provide a comprehensive approach to therapy.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Originally, my clinic was scheduled to open in March of 2020. But with the Covid-19 outbreak, I had to make the decision to put off the opening. By shifted gears, revised dates, and incorporating new, heightened safety measures, I was able to proceed with the opening just a few short months later in June. The opening didn’t come without its challenges. I faced the reality that many potential clients weren’t yet comfortable with coming in for therapy sessions. My team and I consulted with and followed the best of the healthcare practices and added in suggested measures such as limiting wait times, administering temperature checks, making masks mandatory for all, and thoroughly cleaning after each and every session.

Every small business has faced challenges during this ongoing pandemic, and my clinic was no exception. We are strict with following safety protocols, aiming to give our clients peace of mind and a safe environment.

As providers of pediatric, sports, and geriatric physical therapy, among others, we try our best to understand clients’ needs and goals. We work on a plan that not only improves the quality of living but also to provide clients with exercise programs to continue from home. We have very comprehensive post-surgery rehab programs, on a proactive approach, we also highly recommend a preventive program that one can consider before surgery. In some instances, it has avoided the need for small surgeries. Physical Therapy should be at the forefront with any pain, injury, mobility restrictions, posture correction, improve efficiency in sports, prevention of injury, manage heart and lung disease, age-related debility, etc. For example, for Young athletes that have flat feet like my own son who is 12 and plays tennis, a Physical Therapist can help with exercises that can prevent future injuries, among other corrective techniques that can help in their game.

We are totally committed to focusing on whole-body evaluation with emphasis on not only the injured or painful part but also help correct the entire muscular network. We avoid using pain modalities but believe in the movement techniques and full body treatment approach to treat clients’ goals.

What were you like growing up?
I was always an outdoor kind of person, I loved playing outside, biking, hiking, playing sports, dancing, and of course hanging out with friends, I am a very social person and a good listener, which helps immensely in my field of work. I understand clients’ goals by asking the right questions. My team and I can work towards giving our clients a personalized treatment plan that suits their lifestyle expectations.
