Today we’d like to introduce you to Alan Nguyen.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’m Houston born and Houston proud. Wherever I went, I diligently defended it, while only slightly growing weary. It’s all good though because apparently with the seemingly monthly articles talking about how cool Houston was all this time, the rest of the country has caught up.
About two years ago, I bought a camera off Craigslist and since then, I never really put it down. I’ve been extremely fortunate to have people believe in me along the way. After some unforgettable gigs with the Children’s Museum of Houston, Main Street Theater and the Black Sheep Agency, I found my calling to be capturing stories, putting them into a bottle and casting them off into the world.
Has it been a smooth road?
Anything. But. Smooth.
After graduating from the University of Houston, I’ve spent my years doing finance and accounting in one form or another—all until I just couldn’t any longer. In the summer of 2016, I left the city to clear my head (typical, right?) and when I was checking into my flight back to Houston, I remember staring blankly at-the kiosk, so long that it timed out and asked me “do you wish to continue?”
I put in two more quarters, hit continue, and haven’t looked back.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the www.alanforyou.com (Alan Nguyen Photography) (I’m working on something more inventive, okay?) story. Tell us more about the business.
I’m often hesitant about introducing myself as a photographer because it’s been pointed out to me that I was probably a storyteller long before I ever picked up a camera to do it professionally. Everything I do is with purpose and context.
My intention is to create vigorously and vibrantly, and hope that over time, people will gravitate towards my work and it will spark a reaction from them. Any reaction. These reactions create dialogues, and in the long run, meaningful connections and relationships.
And isn’t purpose and context all relationships are?
I’ll embed myself within your brand and make sure that even the most atypical aspects are brought to the surface. I’ll explore every promising lead that will get me to a new story. I’ll empathize with those who are involved and ask them as intuitively as I can to help me understand.
In short, you won’t only get a collection of pretty photos or a slick video, you’ll get a complete narrative. You’ll come away feeling something new and I always hope for that to be optimism.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Social media has become an undecipherable mash of people being expressive and creative while others, including companies and brands, are yelling over them. It’s getting more difficult to cut through noise and it’s even become divisive.
Fortunately, the industry for storytelling doesn’t really ever drastically change. There will be trends that come and go and there will be astoundingly innovative ways to present them. The truth is that stories are told and shown to connect and enrich audiences — and that will never go out of style (we never go out of style).
