Meet Alana Campbell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alana Campbell.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
For most of my life, I trained to become a professional ballet dancer. Ballet was the only life I thought I would ever have. An injury, however, gave me the necessity and the opportunity to explore another art form. Being unable to dance or enjoy dancing left me hunting for a new way to express myself. Photography was something I immediately turned to. I have always been told that I have a “good eye” for photography, but I never realized I could use it as a means of personal expression.

Please tell us about your art.
Being a somewhat reserved person, I often find myself “people watching.” I spend a great deal of time wanting to understand what other people around me are thinking. Photographing people has become a way of communicating with others ─ allowing me to express my own feelings and ideas through collaboration with someone else. It has made me realize how similar we all are. Through photography, I have become more aware of my emotions and how I can tie them to my artwork. Even though I am no longer dancing, there are many elements from dance that I try to incorporate into my photographs.

As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
In my opinion, success is defined by obtaining a consistent and recognizable style. Throughout the past year and a half, I have been working to achieve this. An artist should never be afraid to experiment, because their personality will always shine through.
