Today we’d like to introduce you to Alejandra Reyes.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Alejandra. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My love for photography has always been a part of who I am. From using disposable cameras when I was little to purchasing my very first digital point and shoot and now shooting with my Nikon D750, but I will say that I never thought this would be something I’d get into as a business later on in life. I teach full time, and maybe it was my time off during the summer that made me decide that I wanted something to keep me busy. After debating several possibilities as “hobbies” I decided to go with photography. At first, it was, you know, your typical landscapes and immobile objects. Then, I asked around for models just to see if I could handle motile subjects as well, and then all of a sudden my inbox started to get some traffic asking about sessions. Shortly after I decided it’d be best if I took a few classes in person with a seasoned photographer and some online courses. After a few months of learning, I was officially ready to register Alejandra Reyes Photography a sole proprietorship. Today we have about 40 sessions and a couple of events per year and I absolutely love every moment of it!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has been a dirt road! I’d love to say it’s been magical in every way, shape and form, but the reality is I had no idea how a lot of things operate in the business world. My degree is in elementary education so being the good teacher that I am, I went ahead and did what I do best LEARN! I’ve looked up many things along the way from Photoshop to tax preparation and everything in between. It’s been educational to say the least but I’ve enjoyed the process.
Alejandra Reyes Photography – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We are a husband and wife photography team. I do the shooting and he’s as I call him, my HUBSISTANT! I am teaching him what I’ve picked up along the way! We mainly do natural light photography maternity and family are our forte, but have also taken on several events. I consider our style to be natural, bright and rich in color. Newborns are also one of our many loves. Family photos are so important that we don’t realize their importance until we are reminiscing on our times with someone and how we wish we had taken more photos together. I think what sets us apart is our desire to as I always say “Capture the Love”. Many times photos are spot on and technically speaking they are flawless but they lack that feeling that you really want to look back at. I am definitely proud of the fact that we have been able to provide a service to many families that have never in their lives had a photo session. It gives us such a joy when a family approaches us about an inquiry and decides it’s definitely doable and they end up loving their photos and really give us such a pleased response because they received such stunning images.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Juggling being a full time teacher, a part time photographer, a responsible adult and a caring wife to my wonderful husband is very tricky. I think the trickiest part is taking care of all aspects of my life and I feel that up to this point I’ve been able to do it very well. Career wise I’ve had a few proud moments, the simple fact that most of my work is due to referrals shows me that word of mouth is so big. It makes me so happy when clients speak so highly of me to the point that they send my name over immediately to their friends and family. Recently when I covered a Sweet 16 event, my client contacted me a few days after and told me how pleased she was and that she’d be hiring me for her daughter’s graduation in a couple of years. This just shows me that I must be doing something right and it’s very humbling because a few years back I never imagined anyone would ever express themselves that way of my work.
