Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Condon.
Alex, please share your story with us.
The three founders, Chris DuPont, Abbas Dhilawala, and I met while working for a custom software developer in Clear Lake developing complex software for industries with a high compliance burden. The three of us focus on Life Sciences, which has a litany of rules and regulations, both here in the US and abroad. These regulations can be tricky to navigate and we spend much of our day helping medical companies create new software products that meet all the necessary regulatory hurdles in both in their home country and abroad.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Thankfully, so far, it been a smooth road. The need we are addressing is a widely known issue inside of the medical device industry. No one has really stepped up to tackle the problem head on. Whether we’re talking to a client who needs our product, a strategic investor or a potential acquirer, our products potential rings clear. Our seed round is closing October 1st and we’ve already had great feedback from venture capital looking to help us get to that next level. Houston can be a hard market to find early stage funding in and we feel very fortunate that we haven’t experienced that with Galen Data.
Galen Data – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Over the past few years, we’ve been contacted by medical device companies all over the country looking to build software that is very specific. They would like to connect their medical devices to the internet in a way that complies with FDA and HIPAA. Connecting their devices to the internet opens up a world of opportunity for not just the manufacturer, but clinicians and patients. From the patient perspective, device health can be monitored remotely, family members can potentially keep tabs on elderly loved ones and should something serious develop, not only the patient and their families, but their doctors can stay instantly in the loop. From a medical device manufacturer’s perspective, device data collection has always been difficult.
Historically, it’s required a lot of work, or trips to the doctor to extract, when possible. By connecting device data passively, manufactures can monitor device effectiveness, analyze device data for future improvements and potentially, be able to detect faults and contact patients proactively, instead of reactively. Currently, these device connectivity systems are very expensive, both in terms of upfront cost and time to implement. We are building the first platform solution that would allow any medical device to connect to the internet, that meets the compliance standards of both the FDA and HIPAA and we’re doing it at a price point that would truly open up the marketplace.
Now, not only will the most well-funded medical device companies be able to leverage this powerful tool, but also the newest generation of medical devices companies seeking to leverage this next potential wave in medical device innovation.
What has been the proudest moment of your career so far?
My proudest moment was first sitting in our conference room, with the other two partners, and vetting through the future potential use cases of Galen Data. The feeling of discussing a novel idea in medicine, that has transformative potential and knowing you can execute is what drives me every single day.
