Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis “Fly” Jones.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Alexis “Fly”. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Before ever setting foot inside the field of TV production, I was a publicist. I graduated from Clark Atlanta University in 2007 and received my degree in Mass Media Arts with a concentration in Public Relations. After several internships in college, I entered into media as a Vice President for a boutique PR firm in Houston. As a publicist for many years, I knew how to effectively tell a story– successfully landing clients in coveted magazines, radio & television shows. However, I always felt there was “more.” I felt there was more I could do to help establish a media platform for others to share their contributions to society. I caught the vision of expansion, so I wrote down my dream and prayed for a new door of opportunity in 2012. Unbeknownst to me, the opportunity was around the corner.
While working on a TV segment for a client with former producers for Great Day Houston, I created relationships with them during the process. Long-running talk show host and TV veteran Deborah Duncan recognized “the go getter” in me. I like to call that moment a “God Wink.” When a position became available for the morning show, Deborah remembered my name, and the next thing you know, my phone rang.
On the other line was a voice asking the question: “Alexis, we have a job opening for an Associate Producer and Audience Coordinator. Would you be interested in the position?” Now remember, just a few months earlier, I “wrote the vision” and made it plain. My dream had manifested. That was the beginning of my TV journey. Fast forward to the year 2020, and I now serve as a “seasoned” producer for the morning show in a top 7 market. I’ve met a plethora of amazing people while sharing a wide range of interesting and heartfelt stories! I’m blessed to learn something new weekly. Every day is different and brings forth unique challenges, always testing my ability to be creative.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
In the television biz, most of us strive for perfection for our viewers, but no show is ever “perfect.” When producing, you are challenged to open up your portals of creativity and always try to “picture” what the viewer may want to see, know and understand. Sometimes the outcome of a segment is great, and other times it can be better. Our daily wrap up and post-production meetings with the team are always centered on how we can improve on the next day and in the future. I wouldn’t say there’s been one particular struggle, but there’s a daily challenge for myself to work in excellence. There’s also a responsibility to provide accurate and factual information to the community.
Great day Houston – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We share and tell stories to best serve the community. Personally, I love connecting people, ideas and opportunities. It’s my anointing and my gift to the world. I recognize that my career and platform is not for myself. I’ve been placed in this position by God to be a blessing to honor and to recognize others. Therefore, I take extreme pride in that! And like my nickname infers, I expect others to FLY high with all FAITH and NO FEAR!
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is when a viewer tells me that a segment changed their life or perspective.
Success is when a particular segment prompts individuals to donate to someone battling an injury or illness.
Success is when a segment has saved someone from making a life decision that could be detrimental.
Success is when a story brings a smile to someone’s day.
Success is when a guest comes on the show, and I’ve helped them feel comfortable and have eased their fears.
Those are my personal markers of success defined! In all, SUCCESS IS WALKING IN YOUR PURPOSE!
