Today we’d like to introduce you to Alicia Ramos.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Alicia. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My name is Alicia Ramos. I was born in Monterrey NL, Mexico. I came to the USA when I was 10 yrs old, I grew up in Southwest Houston (Alief Texas) I graduated from the University of Houston in May 2018 with a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism and a minor in Spanish. When I was in my last semester of college, I started looking for job opportunities in other media markets. I knew that if I wanted to get a job as a reporter, I needed it to start outside Houston. My dream was to become a reporter in the Spanish language market. Thankfully, I land my first reporter job the same month of my graduation. I started in Univision Corpus Christi in May 2018 as a Multimedia Journalist. In December 2018, a good opportunity came to my door. I was offered to be back home as an assignment editor for Univision 45 Houston, one of the top media markets nationwide. I was grateful for being back in Houston and working on my dream career.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I have to admit that it was a big challenge. I am the first college graduate of my family. I had no financial help when I was in college. It got to a point where I was working one full time job, another half time job, and full time in college. I am not sure how I was able to do it. But now, I look back, and I see how all the hard work paid it off. I don’t regret any of the sacrifices.
Please tell us about your work.
I work for Univision 45 Houston as an assignment editor. My job consists of looking for stories/content for our newscast. I also gather and confirm information to set up stories for reporters. I am in charge of answer newsroom phones and respond to viewer e-mails. Besides my job duties in the assignments desk, I have the opportunity to present on-air stories for the weekend newscast. Univision 45 has been one of the most-watched newscasts regardless of language. I am proud to be part of this amazing team.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I learned the importance of never give up on your dreams and always believe in yourself no matter what.
