Today we’d like to introduce you to Alisee Mignon.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I arrived from France with my family four years ago. My husband works in oil and he got this new job in Houston through his company that’s how we came here.
At that time our daughter was a year and I was pregnant with my son. We were very excited to start this Texan experience. In Paris, before having my daughter Charlie I was working for the fashion industries. It’s always been my thing and what I have studied at school because I wanted a career in this field. When we got here I realized that Houston wasn’t as big for fashion as it was for oil and gas and let’s be honest my English wasn’t great. I had two kids to raise anyway and the luxury of time to figure what I was going to do.
Truth is that I am not a stay at home mom. I have been raised by a working mom and my parents always wanted me to get a job and be independent. I have always drawn fashion and one of my friend from school started her own brand ‘Sundress’ and is very successful. I think her story pushed my husband to encourage me to do the same. I had a website for another project and it was a lot of fun putting it together and creating my brand. That gave me the idea to have a blog, it also made sense since it’s a business that can follow me everywhere.
At the same, my neighbor and friend Erin was looking for a job and she kept encouraging me with my project of dress collection. She was very into photography and has an amazing computer and problem-solving skills. She said that she would love to be my partner. And then it clicked and everything came together. We were going to have a blog so we could advertise our own brand and sell it on the website. This would also allow us to partner with other and try new things which always get us very excited.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s been a long road for so many reasons. As far as the blog we had to learn everything from scratch and by ourselves. Blogging touches so many different fields and requires lots of skills. Computer, photography, videos, social media, beauty, fashion, marketing, branding. It’s been a learning process and still is. Finding the good angle for the blog and our esthetic was also a challenge. I think we are getting there.
Finding the good suppliers for our dresses was also a struggle. We wanted a local supplier so we could check on the products. The difficulties was to find the level of quality that we wanted. I have worked in luxury and I wanted to make clothes that I would buy myself. We didn’t have that much money to do it and went through a whole bunch of disappointments but we finally made it.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with This is about Style! – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
This is about Style is a lifestyle blog more focused on fashion – beauty – travel and well being. We will be launching our youtube channel soon as well as our own brand that we are going to sell on the website. I wanted to design dresses that would be a dream to wear in the warm Houston weather.
It was natural for me to include my Mediterranean culture and create a colorful, chic and comfortable collection. We used the lightest and flawless materials to create our first dress. I think we made it, our first style is pretty and comfy! We will have our first mini collection for spring: a dress and several tee shirts with my own designs. I am very proud of us!
What role has luck (good luck or bad luck) played in your life and business?
I don’t think Luck played a role in what we have accomplished until now. It’s been a hard journey, a bumpy road full of challenges to overtake. It’s all about work and the positive attitude that helps you go through anything that can happen. I am proud of the place we are at now but it’s just the beginning.
