Today we’d like to introduce you to Alysa Kowis.
Hi Alysa, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
This passion project started with my own birth experience almost 11 years ago. I knew that I didn’t want others to experience what I had gone through, but I wasn’t quite sure how to go about it yet. I ended up helping people in another way for 13 years, with recruiting and Human Resources. I loved my job and helping people get the careers of their dreams or advocating for them in the workplace for so many years but recently found myself desiring more. The seed that was planted for birth work grew over the next eight years, assisting friends through pregnancy and labor.
I began considering seriously pursuing birth work, not just as a hobby but as my business. It’s taken many sacrifices, nights awake worrying, lots of wins and losses to get here, but I’m so glad I pushed through! Now I have been in business for three years and managed to survive the pandemic relatively unscathed! My clients are like family to me, no matter what our stories are intertwined if even just for a season.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not at all! Doulas are not as commonplace here as they are in other parts of the world so that natural word of mouth isn’t all that natural. My first ever paying client ended up being almost a mirror image of my own birth trauma, right down to the doctor. That was a challenge in itself to reconcile and move forward from.
I kicked things off with some really good momentum and then the pandemic hit. I had to pivot everything I’d built to become virtual and find ways to still provide the level of care that I pride myself on. It’s only within the past few months that doulas have started to be allowed back into the labor & delivery unit.
It’s also been a bigger mountain to climb than expected in areas I hadn’t even considered. I’m a one-woman show… which means all marketing, graphic design, websites, social media, and back-end work is just me! That’s been a big hurdle and learning curve but I’ve found my style and my voice and am currently working on updating all of those things.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I adore Houston for its diversity of cultures and walks of life! It’s a melting pot in the best way. It can definitely be overwhelming though, and chaotic. This is why my family lives out away from the city a bit so that we can enjoy the best of both worlds!
