Meet Alyssa Sloan of Ever Noire in Spring

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alyssa Sloan.

Alyssa, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I bought my first DSLR back in 2012. Initially, I simply wanted to document my travels and have great photos of myself. Eventually, a friend suggested that I apply for an open photographer position with United Airlines. For two years I documented the flight attendant training process. It was a great experience because it gave me the opportunity to use my camera daily, which allowed me to develop my skill and shooting style.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
When I first started shooting professionally, I focused on Real Estate photography. I knew I wanted to be a photographer but was overwhelmed with all of the nuances that came with shooting portraits, and family photos. To get over my anxiety, I began to go to some of the protests and assembly’s that were happening at the time. I would bring my camera and found that people aren’t as scary as we make them out to be. Now, I’ll take photos at random events (if it seems appropriate and welcomed). Most of the times the organizers are appreciative of the quality images, which has helped me organically build business relationships.

Ever Noire – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Ever Noire is a photography concept that allows you to try before you buy. Our photo shoots are free, and clients only pay for the photos that they love. We specialize in capturing Black People beautifully. When I began shooting portraits, I realized that the technical methods for properly exposing subjects just weren’t accurate for those of us with darker skin. We all have photos of us as children, where the scene is lit perfectly, yet when looking for ourselves, we scroll to see only a dark figure where our expressions should have been. I’m proud that Ever Noire is committed to perfecting the details. Everyone should have access to accurate depictions of their most beautiful moments. I think what sets us apart, is that we know what it’s like to be that dark figure. We genuinely want to give our clients the experience of seeing themselves in their best light.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I believe that success is in the family. My husband and I are laying the groundwork so that we can be free to focus primarily on our family as it grows. I’d like to eventually take a more passive role in Ever Noire, allowing it to become an avenue for new photographers to gain experience and develop their shooting style.
