Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Markwalter.
Hi Amanda, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’m a photographer who loves to capture the feelings and special moments in your lives. I got my first camera when I was 11 years old and took pictures everywhere I went. While I was at university, I was able to polish my amateur skills by taking my friend’s engagement photos and capturing so many fun memories from my college days… I found the whole process mesmerizing, from scouting locations for planned shoots and capturing great candid moments with friends. In my last year of college, I worked in public relations for my university, where I was able to help shoot events and produce advertising material. This is where I sharpened my skills and got the nudge to make my beloved hobby a career. With encouragement from my husband, I’ve turned my dreams into reality and I love what I do.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve had a really great experience so far! I’ve enjoyed the challenge of practicing new techniques and have collected a good amount of lenses to cover any situation. I’ve tackled the challenge of learning how constantly to improve my photography by taking courses and gaining knowledge on how to create vibrant, professional images. I’ve also been able to learn a lot from other photographers. I’ve been able to meet and learn from other photographers by attending local art shows and galleries. The best piece of advice for people starting in photography or wanting to up their game is to always have a camera with you and to talk with other photographers whenever you can! The network of photographers in Houston is incredibly strong and is very willing to help you with suggestions or answering questions.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
My husband Denton has been my most incredible support! He’s the one that gave me the push I needed to turn my hobby into a career. He also is the one you’ll see carrying my camera bag with me on family photoshoots, he is so supportive of what I do!
