Meet Amanda Mott of Amanda Lee Mott in Sugar Land

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Mott.

Amanda, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I moved to Los Angeles when I graduated college. I worked in the film industry; art direction and music/celebrity photography. After about a year, I got my job with US Soccer. I work for US Soccer still and am a freelance photographer when I’m in Houston.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No way. Well in LA, particularly in the film industry, no one is willing to pay you for your services/assistance. And when I would challenge that, they would say things like, “there are dozens of people in line behind you who would take your position, and they’d be more willing to work for free”.

I wasn’t catching a break and didn’t for a long time. A common story for struggling artists living in Los Angeles.
My job with US Soccer kind of fell into my lap. I was looking for any work that would pay me, and US Soccer was the first company to give me a chance.

I travel about half of the month for them, and then the rest of the month I freelance in Houston. It’s still not a smooth road, but I’m doing what I love. And every now and then, I’ll grind hard enough or get lucky enough and a door will open for me and lead to big opportunities.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
As a freelancer, I shoot anything from portraits to couples to landscapes. I specialize in fine art photography and portraits. I love using color backdrops, color gels, flowers, shadows; anything to make my photographs look unique and different.

I think I’m most proud of my hustle. I built my business on my own, and I’m grateful for where it’s gone and where it’s continuing to go, and how much I’ve accomplished at 24 years old.

My artistic vision and execution set me apart from others. I take risks and work outside of my comfort zone all for the sake of creating new and one-of-a-kind art.

What were you like growing up?
I was quiet, but I was always thinking and dreaming and planning; which is how I still am. I always knew what I wanted and was determined to keep at something until I got it.

Growing up, I wasn’t athletic so I was more interested in music and writing and movies and photos.
