Meet Ana Lazcano of A.L. Designs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ana Lazcano.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Ana. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Over a year ago I started making jewelry, something I once used to be interested in and did a bit of many years ago. I finally started creating a brand, A.L. Designs. I made jewelry that was one of a kind, unique and different. I’ve always been hands on, a builder. I was blessed with the ability to fix things, learn quickly and create something out of nothing, it’s what I applied to my jewelry making. I always believed there was a way to fix anything. But, the day came that I couldn’t fix something that could change my life forever. And like everything else in my life, I had to leave this in God’s hands…I had to leave my sight in God’s hands. A year ago, my good eye was struck with a jagged piece of concrete, thrown with a weed wacker that turned on. I just so happen to be in the wrong place, at the wrong time. For the next 5 months, I struggled with blindness. I couldn’t see, the inflammation in my eye was so bad that I had to take eye drops to take the swelling away…but my chances of seeing again were slim. Mind you, my other eye’s vision isn’t very good and not reliable. So with prayer, supplication, and trust, I believed my sight would be restored. There was nothing anyone could do, but I knew God would help me through this storm. I had been through so much in my life, but nothing prepared me for this. If I didn’t have sight, I wouldn’t be able to see my children’s faces again, drive, live life normally, or create the jewelry I enjoyed making. Everything would change, nothing would ever be the same again. But because I left it all in the hands of the one who created my eyes….and 1 year later, I am now selling my jewelry in markets and building this brand up again. Everyday, my sight gets a little bit better. Things get a little better. I have my hard days, but I’ve learned that nothing is impossible with God.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The greatest struggle was not being able to see. It was essential to what I do, and it was just not possible to see anything small, at a distance, or even close by. I also struggled financially, because losing my vision meant I could no longer work. Money became hard to come by and my son had to be the main provider of our home during my recovery while he and my daughter took care of me. They had to guide me everywhere, or else I’d bump into everything. It was more than just hard…it felt impossible to deal with.

Please tell us about A.L. Designs.
I make one a kind jewelry pieces that can’t be copied. I incorporate different materials such as leather, semi-precious stones and different metals to create necklaces, rings, bracelets and earrings. I love how there is always something for everyone despite their price range or style. My pieces are create for people who may want something simple, or someone who may want something exotic and over the top.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memory was of how amazed I was when I asked my grandfather what a mustard seed is. He grabbed a pen, a napkin, and pressed a dot on the napkin. What left me amazed, and what I put to work till this day, is that he said that that is the size of faith God expects of us to move a mountain.
