Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrew Heber.
Andrew, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I grew up in a small Indiana town on a strawberry farm. The summers were full of activity as we prepared for a three week strawberry season. After high school, I completed my undergraduate and a graduate degree in Engineering and also completed an MBA while working at Caterpillar Inc full time. Caterpillar was a great company to work for but I have always had an entrepreneurial itch and fascination with real estate. I started buying a home 10 years ago and currently own 20 properties and am now looking for my first apartment complex. In addition to the real estate, I decided to leave my Engineering job at Caterpillar in 2013 to start a State Farm Insurance Agency. This combination is great because I can work at the Agency but also have the flexibility to work on real estate investing on the side.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There have been many struggles along the way. Leaving a good W2 job to start an Agency was a significant risk and I lost quite a bit of money my first two years as I worked to grow my customer base. However, the struggle has now started to pay off now that my customer base has grown. I also love helping people make sure that their assets are protected and educating folks on how our policies can protect them from the unexpected.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
As a State Farm Agent, I am able to help protect customers autos, home, disability, life, and business policies.
What were you like growing up?
I was a more reserved individual growing. I loved math and analyzing things which led naturally to an Engineering education. I was also the oldest of six children which meant I had to take on significant responsibility early on.
