Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Harris Cannizzo.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My desire to live in a space of beauty and harmony was developed from an early age. I was raised in the country and lived on a hill in a white Jim Walter house that overlooked a large valley and, depending on the season, grew corn, okra and peas. Across the valley on another hill lived my grandmother, better known as Madea, and she raised chickens and other wildlife animals. It was a simple life full of country living and outdoor discovery. No trips to the mall, the movie theater or playing video games. Playtime was nature time, and I loved it! Imagine eating off the land, chasing fireflies and sitting round a pot belly stove eating sweet potato pie. It’s those memories that helped me to become the creative gal I am today.
In 2016, my passion for nature and bringing nature’s beauty into our homes grew and then expanded to highlighting the benefits of helping our planet and helping humanity. Plants make us healthy and whole AND help with climate change. I want to help people just fall in love with nature!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Over the years, I struggled with finding the right niche for me and how I could best serve our city. But once it clicked for me, it all became clear: it’s all about the plants. Wanting to make plants available to everyone – those living in small spaces, or in high rises and mid-rises, and really people from all walks of life. When you nurture a plant, when you have green in your space, it just makes a difference. I really felt it blossom (if you’ll pardon the pun), when I expanded from just doing markets to really getting plants in every home. I truly believe that what I am offering – real plants for real people – is something essential to everyone. We bring nature inside!
La Lydia Garden Boutique – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We are known for being truly unique. When I see nature, I just see beauty. Taking that beauty and crafting it for your everyday living space is our specialty. Nature gifts in vintage and modern containers. Small space gardening. Potting on the spot – and not everyone can offer that. At our markets, we set up shop with a potting station for families, for young professionals, for mature gardeners. We want to make having a plant a reality for anyone who wants to green their home!
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is a two-way path for me: it’s not just my success, it’s the people I meet creating their own success. When someone comes up to my booth and has no idea what they’re doing with their plants, or they see a plant that they just have to own because of how it’s crafted, and I am able to help them to meet their needs – THAT is success to me. It’s knowing each person is leaving with something that makes them happy. Success is also making sure everyone knows they are special. It’s being able to do what I love to do and give 100% to every customer.
