Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Kaatz.
Angela, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started off with very little money in my pocket but a lot of dreams in my heart. My Mom was my inspiration as I watched her work her butt off while going to college to become a nurse. I was working hard to put myself through school while raising my autistic daughter so there were quite a few rough days here and there. I always wanted to help people in any way I could just like my mother, but in 2011 I was told that my days were about to get rougher. I was diagnosed with multiple chronic illnesses which left me almost bedridden. I’ve never been one to lay down and give up because I have a daughter to raise and be an example for. I’m tough because I have to be and I’m strong because that’s the choice I have made to be.
I came from a family of dreamers and entrepreneurs so it was no surprise that I would follow their lead. I reunited with an old friend in 2014 who not only became my husband but in 2017 we became partners in business too. He adopted my daughter and we began our journey in Illumination Marketing.
Our daughter couldn’t understand why business after business kept closing their doors, so we decided to take on local businesses with our skills, passion and our drive to watch family’s dreams come to life. I adopted the phrase going and growing because that sums up our goals in business and life. This year I merged my 2nd company Inspiration PR to become a part of our Illumination Marketing journey and here I am today. I’m standing taller than ever even if I’m only 5’2″.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road was certainly never smooth but that’s what makes it a worthwhile journey. If the sea was smooth sailing your whole life, then how would you ever learn to navigate through rough waters.
Being a special needs mom requires a lot of your time and on some days, you may get multiple school phone calls just to deal with issues that come up. My daughter is a challenge but that’s only because she is a super intelligent and strong young lady. She is my inspiration to always do better.
The other challenges are my health. Having chronic illnesses can take you down in the blink of an eye without warning. I’ve just learned that it’s ok to fall down as long as you don’t stay there. Even if you have to crawl, always keep moving forward.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Illumination Marketing – what should we know?
I like to think of us as the one-stop shop for all of your marketing needs. When I say all, I truly mean ALL. We build websites for businesses, create colorful content with graphic design, manage social media, email marketing, filming & producing videos, public relations, branding, SEO, and most importantly is consulting to keep our client’s businesses growing.
We are proud of being very selective with our clients and being the team that invests our hearts into what we do. We don’t just want to work FOR our clients, but we want to build a partnership with them. We do this so we can get to know who they are, what they do, and how they want to serve their community. We generally work with families or couples who not only love what they do but love the customers they take care of. We don’t just “phone it in”. We want to be a part of a team that makes our Houston community grow!
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I believe that it’s my strength and fortitude that have led me to where I am today and where I’m going tomorrow. Those are the qualities that push me to always do better and provide a future my daughter can be proud of.
