Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Angela Sturm, MD, FACS.
Dr. Strum, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Growing up in a small town in West Texas, I learned the value of hard work and ingenuity. My desire to bring the best out in people intersected with my artistic side during a rotation as a medical student. While watching surgeons create an ear for a child who was born without one, I realized that facial plastic surgery was my passion. I completed medical school and residency at Baylor College of Medicine where I received numerous awards for surgical excellence, including the Outstanding Otolaryngology Medical Student Award and the top medical student research prize from the national academy of Otolaryngology. In medical school, I found additional inspiration in the academic side of medicine in publishing medical journal articles and surgical techniques.
Following medical education, I pursued the distinguished American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) fellowship program where I trained alongside Dr. Russell Kridel to gain extensive expertise in cutting edge head and neck surgical techniques. In addition, I sought further education in facial feminization. I continued my academic pursuits with clinical research in areas of ethnic rhinoplasty, revision lower eyelid surgery, septoplasty, male rhinoplasty, revision rhinoplasty and the long-term effects of using irradiated cartilage in rhinoplasty. I found the ideal practice with Facial Plastic Surgery Associates where I can provide personal, individualized care for each patient in a warm, welcoming environment, give back to my community, and provide care to victims of domestic abuse through the Face Foundation.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Challenges are opportunities for growth. As a surgeon, I was trained very well to take care of patients and perform surgery. However, the business aspect of running a practice was a new set of challenges. I embraced this as a new direction to expand my knowledge base and now give lectures to new physicians on marketing and starting a practice.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Facial Plastic Surgery Associates – what should we know?
I am passionate about working with patients using the latest aesthetic procedures, whether surgical, non-surgical or combination of both, to look and feel their best. I have had extensive training in face and neck surgery. I perform cosmetic surgery of the face and neck including rhinoplasty, facelift surgery, eye surgery, neck lift, facial implants, otoplasty and facial feminization. I have also had additional training and expertise in non-surgical modalities for facial rejuvenation; including advanced laser techniques, such as, Ulthera and Fraxel, as well as injectables, such as, Botox and fillers.
I absolutely love what I do and have wonderful patients. I am grateful that they have nominated me for H Texas Magazine’s Top Doc in 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2016, Living Magazine’s Top Surgeon, Houston Business Journal’s People on the Move and 40 under 40, Blazing Star Award by Texas Women’s Chamber of Commerce, Top Women in Business in 2013, one of the Top 30 Influential Women of Houston in, Best Female Cosmetic Surgeon in Out Smart in 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016, Top 25 Beautiful People in Houston, and given the Patients’ Choice Award and Compassionate Doctor Award by Vitals.com consistently.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I would not be where I am without my parents who always believed in me. My mentor and now associate, Dr. Russell Kridel, not only trained me in facial plastic surgery techniques but also the subtleties in aesthetics. After graduating from fellowship, I joined his practice and am grateful to continue to have him as support and inspiration.
We have an incredible staff that help keep our office running smoothly and help us provide an incredible patient experience from the first time you call the office through the entire process.
