Meet Anthony Rogers of Anthony Rogers Music

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anthony Rogers.

Anthony, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
For sure well for me everything got started in California.
I was born and raised in San Bernardino, California, where I lived for 19 years of my life. I didn’t really start getting serious about worship or music at all really, until I started going to Ecclesia Christian Fellowship. I met the man who would become a music mentor, father figure, and a friend which was my worship director Cliff Duncan.

This guy man…trail blazed a path for me to follow and who taught everything I had learned about music from ages 15-19. So I followed him, back to his home here in Houston which I’ve now lived for seven years. I didn’t know that my move to Houston would be the start of my career in music. I found out quickly God had a bigger plan for me here all of the time.

Fast forward to this part of my journey, my background in piano and voice, made it possible to start writing and creating original content. I knew leading worship, writing, and recording was something I wanted to do for a long time, but it took a lot of time prayer and effort to even get serious about it. Even though I had a history in writing and playing R&B and Hip Hop styles, I turned this knowledge back into my original passion for writing and singing music for the church. I have a heart for communicating the good news to both a younger and aged audience of all backgrounds.

I also have the heart to try to tear down the stereotypical thought of what being a Christian means. I believe the way Christians are looked at in society now is not the way I believe Jesus meant for us to portray ourselves. So my goal is to make sure that whatever image or platform God allows me to have, what will be displayed is a broken person who is being held together by God. That any goodness I can claim is not by myself but through my trust that Jesus is covering me completely.

I’m doing all that while living here with my wife Morgan and son Jayden, and also being the contemporary worship director at First Methodist Houston, a church that has been in existence for over 175 years. I am currently working on several projects all the majority of which involve The Source Band.

So I can say the journey has been busy and a wave of ups and downs to this point. Overall I’d say it’s been life giving though.
Has it been a smooth road?
Yeah the heck right… It has been anything but a smooth road. I have faced obstacles all along this journey.
From driving a 1999 Toyota Camry, with 350,000+ miles on it, with no door handles and no A/C, 1,500 miles across the desserts of California, into the high humidity of Houston Texas. During the middle of Summer. All that was just to get to Houston.
I have to battle physical and mental health issues. I’ve dealt with relational issues that sometimes lead to deep depression and thoughts of suicide.
I had to learn how to become a husband and a stepfather at the same time without steady examples of that daily in my life. I’ve had to continue trying to move forward even when my passions were critiqued. The list goes on and on and is still growing. That’s life, and I believe God built me for it. It’s very very very hard to handle sometimes, but I look forward to God’s grace and promises. I ultimately know that this is what I’m supposed to be doing. But it ain’t easy… Trust me.
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
In short, I am a Worship Director, Singer/Songwriter, and Producer.  I am writing and producing music for The Source (FMH’s Contemporary Worship Service) to release a few live albums. I have also produced and written music for some artist in here in Houston and back home in California. Music, in general, is my forte. With support from my church, I’ve been able to produce and record Singles, Eps, and Albums with a group of individuals God has given me to create what is now called The Source Band (TSB).We are making strides to become a group where worship of Christ comes where ever we are. We want to do that in Houston, and everywhere else God would have us go. We want to be authentic and real about our lives and the various ventures God has led us into. Our goal is to create a unique sound that I feel has yet to be tried in mainstream Christian music. We want to have a sound that’s both worshipful, real and inspiring, but also all around good music.
I just released an EP called ‘Note To Self’ that touches on my road through anxiety and depression. My hope that gives the Christian perspective on what that means for me. I believe there aren’t enough songs that talk about these things through the lens of a believer. I believe it’s a scary and unfamiliar things to walk through and I want to offer a perspective that shows that we aren’t walking alone.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I think music and crafts are always evolving. It always has and always will. But that’s what makes it incredible right and through the power of Christ, I see us living out our calling to the full extent inside that. I see us doing shows in other cities near and far. I see us hosting conferences on Worship overall. Everything from ascetics and practical elements to the meaning behind why we do what we do. I see us putting out more music of all different sounds and varieties. however the industry changes I want to be sure that we push to have a voice and create for christ in a way that is relatable and real.
