Today we’d like to introduce you to April Garcia.
April, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Social media is a gateway, an outlet for those seeking a bigger platform to reach other like-minded individuals. My love of music lead me to poetry and history, which was black and white. Social media made me feel like Dorothy in technicolor pushing me to create visuals for all those memories and ideas I tend to hoard. Thus, came collage. And in enters DJ Charlee Brown who appreciated my words and vision.
Has it been a smooth road?
Houston is a barricaded city. Being from parts unknown, the Rio Grande Valley, it was an adjustment. I always wanted to be a part of the underground movement of shakers, shifters, and frequency seekers, but it always seemed like I was pounding against glass. Being a woman, and a Latina, fluent in musicology and culture, it always feels like show and tell, to show and prove, not only what I know, but who I know. But once someone, anyone is who anyone, takes your hand, it makes that struggle feel like the biggest exhale. Finally, someone gets me. Finally, someone took a chance.
What else should our readers know?
The Vibes HTX is a culmination of creatives seeking to vibrate higher. Getting to say that is enough to make me proud of this brand, this band of creatives. I, well I do anything I can, but let’s call me the Operations Director for now. I specialize in branding. I keep my hand on the cursor making sure that I really listen to those really listening. I am known for the content I create via Instagram, but most notably for my flyers especially my first one. It was a remix of the Morton salt label, that features a turntable sprinkling Vibes in place of the salt shaker.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
This city has a lot to offer but you have to offer it something first. This city is all about branding so if you’re going to start here, get out there. Make a name for yourself. Shake hands, kiss babies. But most importantly have a product or provide a service that sets you apart, that you can really stand behind. And I always say, “Show Up and Show Out.” At the end of the day, the city owes you nothing, and as much as outdated marketing books say “location, location, location,” it’s really about mindset and your outlook, not your zip code.
